For anyone seriously interested in learning about Chinese medicine, Beinfield and Korngold provide a comprehensive, though technical, look at it. The book is divided into three parts: theory; the psychology of Chinese medicine and therapy; and such treatment methods as acupuncture, herbs and diet. Licensed acupunturists, Beinfield and Korngold stress that the models of Eastern and Western medicine are significantly different. Consequently, so are methods, emphases and outcomes. Chinese medicine, they claim, readjusts the body's balance and enhances self-healing--while Western medicine, in contrast, stresses suppressing and eliminating pathological phenomena, and crisis-intervention. The authors don't discount the need, in some instances, for Western medicine. In fact, they bring this issue up poignantly with an event close to home: their son was born with a heart deformity that required specialized surgery. To help maintain his health, his parents incorporated herbal remedies in his diet. A particularly interesting concept is "culinary alchemy" or kitchen medicine, based on the Chinese tenet "Who we are determines what is most beneficial for us to eat." The authors provide an extensive, cross-referenced compendium of herb names, as well as information on using Chinese patent medicines and formulas for general health problems.

Well written and engaging but not worth your time

This book is... incomplete. I had hoped for a more thorough exploration of the Traditional Chinese Medicine systems I learned in Massage Therapy school, where we learned the basics of acupressure and some herbs. Thiis book is highly westernized and leaves out a great deal. To give you an idea it doesn't even include a map of the meridians, and makes no mention of some of them.

Interesting book for someone wanting to learn more about eastern medicine! A+. Would recommend getting in regular book form.

This book surprised me. I'm a nurse in the U.S. and from what I've read in this book, I don't know why we don't use more and more eastern medicine. I can't wait to learn more about it, this book was a great beginner book for someone interested in eastern medicine. I can't wait to learn more. Great book. I got it in Kindke edition, but will also be ordering the regular book also bc of the great recipes at the back of book, reference to herbal formulas, and just overall note taking/highlights of the book. YES there is that much good stuff in here, wonderful beginning to learning more!

A Clear Presentation

This is the most involved and lucid explanation of the Five Phases that I have found. I refer many of my patients to this book when they come for their initial session. It has numerous drawings, charts and graphs to support the written text. The Five Phase Theory, as presented in this book, can assist practicing acupunturists or students of Oriental Medicine in deepening their understanding of how to successfully handle the myriad problems and dis-eases presented by their patients. In my 25 years of practice I found extremely few books so well written and organized for everyday use and review.

The historical part may conveniently be divided into two sections. The first concerns the roles of both sexes in the Victorian era, whereas the second section brings us closer to the reality of men and women in Ireland, and to be more specific in Dublin. About the Author

Arlene Fink (PhD) is Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles, and president of the Langley Research Institute. Her main interests include evaluation and survey research and the conduct of research literature reviews as well as the evaluation of their quality. Dr. Fink has conducted scores of evaluation studies in public health, medicine, and education. She is on the faculty of UCLA’s Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program and is a scientific and evaluation advisor to UCLA’s Gambling Studies and IMPACT (Improving Access, Counseling & Treatment for Californians with Prostate Cancer) programs. She consults nationally and internationally for agencies such as L’institut de Promotion del la Pr�vention Secondaire en Addictologie (IPPSA) in Paris, France, and Peninsula Health in Victoria, Australia. Professor Fink has taught and lectured extensively all over the world and is the author of more than 130 peer-reviewed articles and 15 textbooks.

I can honestly say that I disagree with the person that gave this book 1 star. Pastor Jim sent a free copy to me based on a relatives request and this book has changed my life and I made a nice donation to his ministry upon my increase. So Pastor Jim's humble act of generosity has been returned to his ministry ten fold...just like the Bible says. If you read and apply everything in this book in addition to your daily walk with God, it will change your life! Pastor Jim is not saying there is a "shortcut" he is saying there is a Covenant that God made for all believers that they should not lack or want in any area of their lives, money, health, happiness and this is what the book shares and how to apply that blessing to your life. There is power in speaking Gods words! I would highly recommend this book and I am just one humble person who was given a free copy by a relative and its has changed my life forever. This is one of those books that comes along once in a while that is life changing.

A great book for anyone wishing to know more obout bulldog breeds, it also expells some of the myths surrounding fighting dog breeds. this book does not promote the fighting of dogs, but does explain the history of the barbarrick so called sport.

Excellent review of the world's most powerful dogs

Whether or not this book is new or old to the dog world in general, it wasn't new to me. I hadn't heard of several of the dogs contained herein, and it was very interesting to see what they look like and read about their history and gameness.

I learned quite a bit about gameness, and the inappropriately labeled "sport" of dogfighting, although this book DOES NOT (nor do I) support or promote dogfighting. I also learned that Dr. Semencic really likes the American Pit Bull Terrier - as it is the gamest of all breeds.

For someone who didn't know very much about the so-called fighting dogs going in, this was an excellent introduction. The information was accessible, and pictures contained within were helpful in getting a good feel for each dog that was discussed.
