About the Author
Jacob Lauterbach (1873-1942) was born in Galicia, studied in Germany, and received rabbinical ordination. In 1903 he immigrated to America and later became professor of Talmud at the Hebrew Union College. A prolific author, his greatest work is considered to be his edition of the Mekhilta, originally published in 1933.

David Stern is Ruth Meltzer Professor of Classical Hebrew Literature at the University of Pennsylvania, and director of its Jewish Studies Program. He is also a member of the university’s Department of Religious Studies and Program in Comparative Literature.

Rabbi Ishmael on Exodus

A very fine book of Rabbinic commentary and story on Exodus 12-35. The student interested in rabbinic literature and its usefulness to NT studies should enjoy this work. With both a Hebrew/Aramaic text and an English text, the learner can avail themselves of either or both sides of the page. This can be used as a commentary supplement or just to sit down and read a few pages for enjoyment. Some knowledge of Jewish concepts is helpful but not critical to its usefulness.

In contrast, the case studies included in the earlier volume (Dubai, Sana’a, Baghdad, Algiers, Tunis, and Cairo), now supplemented in this volume by three older cities (Amman, Beirut, and Rabat) and five newer oil cities (Riyadh, Kuwait City, Manama, Doha and Abu-Dhabi), focus, often critically, on their rapid transformations.

Each case study traces its colonial and post-colonial history, the evolution of its distinctive social and physical structures, and its intersection with the region and the world. It pays particular attention to, inter alia, the effects of recent wars, migration patterns, petroleum prices, noting the increased role of ‘rulers’ in city planning/real estate investment both within and between Arab countries. Each traces the increased interactions between multinational firms and local developers as they strategize and compete to elevate themselves to global city status. Neoliberalism and State-sponsored advanced capitalism are all implicated in the painful task of balancing identity and post-modernity.

A Classic on Inter-Arab Politics

Patrick Seale's "Struggle for Syria" should be one of the first books anyone interested in Syria or the Middle East reads. It is a crime that Yale UP has allowed it to go out of print. Seale was the first Middle East specialist to give us a comprehensive and extremely lively explanation of how the emerging Arab state system actually worked. What is more, he tied it deftly and imaginatively to the domestic politics of the region - something no one had done so well at the time, and few have come close to emulating since. It is as relevant today as it was in 1965.

Seale was one of the best reporters in the Middle East during the 1960s and remains so today. He interviewed just about every politician and military figure of importance in Syria, where his father taught, and he grew up. His Arabic and French are fluent, and his 6th sense for what makes people tick is unerring.

Some have accused Seale of being soft on Arab nationalism and the early Ba`thists, but no one can claim he didn't know them and understand their view of the world. Every Syria specialist owes Seale a tremendous debt. With out him, we would know half of what we do of Syrian politics in the 20th century. Most of our works are but dull shadows of his. All of us start by contending with his arguments and evidence. I spent years in archives in Washington, London, France, and Syria going over the diplomatic correspondence for the period he wrote about. He never made a mistake of fact. It is quite amazing. So many others did - or they missed important elements of the story.

Seale's biography of Hafiz al-Asad also remains the best book on contemporary Syria. But the Struggle for Syria is a true masterpiece.

An excellent book on Union Pacific golden age steam.

This is a great book if you're a steam fan. It's covers all types of motive power used by Union Pacific during the late 40s and 50s, 4-8-8-4 Big Boys, Challengers, Northerns and so on. All the photos are black and white, but are high quality with detailed captions and chapter descriptions. This book would also be useful for anyone interested in modeling a railroad around this area or for UP steam in general. Another high-quality book from Kalmbach Publishing.
