Great for More Than Corporate Leadership

John Maxell’s book, The Five Levels of Leadership, is an invaluable resource for organizations, ministries, families, and individuals seeking growth and development. Maxwell’s keen insights into the different levels of leadership, how to develop one’s self and others in each level, and the poignant personal evaluations for each reader are some of the reasons this book is priceless for everyone.

Maxwell begins with the premise that the purpose of leadership is to produce more leaders and to help each person move toward the highest level of achievement they can reach. Then he lists and explains the five levels of leadership that he has seen and experienced. They are first leadership by position, the lowest, weakest, least helpful, most self-centered form of leadership. The second level is leadership by permission, the first level of leadership which can only be earned. It is this second level which make the following three levels possible. The third level of leadership is production as a result of the respect earned in level 2. The fourth level of leadership is people development as a result of productivity. Finally, the fifth level of leadership is the pinnacle of leadership – that level when your leadership extends its influence beyond your own reach.

The fascinating value of this book is that Maxwell presents the information in such a manner that, though it is geared to positions of leadership within an organization, the principles it teaches are obviously intended for everyone’s personal development. The book banks on character, morals, and sound ethics. These principles are priceless for individuals of any society and in any relationship. One doesn’t need to hold a position of leadership in order to be a leader. In fact, Maxwell makes this point very clear when he advises that supervisors should promote the leaders present instead of attempting to make a leader out of the person they just promoted. Amazing just like so many of Maxwell's books

This book is a great book on leadership. If you are a leader or manager or in any sort of leadership role in either work, church, communities, or all of the above, this is a great resource in how to be successfully developing people. It gives you hands on guidelines for what it looks like to get through and how to get to all of the levels of leadership while also being able to equip leaders that are in the process of developing other leaders around them to be the best leaders they can be.

If the voice doesn't put you to sleep, the content will. There is no new concepts or insights that the author shares. There is nothing original and there are no connections with the stories with the content. The audio sounds like the author was reading from a poorly written military manual. In fact, I would rather read FM 6-22 instead of listening to another minute of this. Save yourself a few bucks and get the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People or Good to Great.

About the Author

Mark Klion, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from St. Lawrence University in upstate New York, he earned his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital. He then completed a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Chicago. During his fellowship he specialized in arthroscopic surgery and reconstructive knee and shoulder surgery. He is a clinical instructor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and a member of their shoulder and sports medicine service. He serves as an educator for the medical school and the department of orthopedic surgery. He is also the director of orthopedics at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York. He performs the newest techniques for cartilage repair, regeneration, and meniscal transplantation. Dr. Klion has extensive experience with arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs and shoulder stabilization procedures.

Dr. Klion is also an avid triathlete and marathon runner. He has completed 10 Ironman triathlons, including Hawaii Ironmans in 2000 and 2001. He has completed 15 marathons and several ultradistance races. He is also the creator of the DVD series BodyworksMD, a physician guided physical therapy rehabilitation program. He serves as the medical co directo r for the New York City Triathlon and Toughman Half Ironman and is the orthopedic consultant for the Triathlon Academy and Foundation bicycle team.

Troy Jacobson has been a leader in the field of triathlon coaching since 1992. He is the owner of Lifesports, Inc., an endurance multisport coaching company, and is recognized as a pioneer in developing and marketing online coaching services. He is the innovator and driving force behind the popular endurance sport training DVDs Spinervals Cycling, and founded the National Triathlon Academy in 2000.  He created Train Right software, an intuitive coaching program chosen as the official software of Tri-Fed USA, in the mid 1990’s.

When Tri-Fed became USA Triathlon, Jacobson became a member of the inaugural USA Triathlon coaching committee. A personal coach to athletes of all abilities from age groupers to a former U.S. Olympian, Jacobson served as The Official Coach of IRONMAN, 2010 through 2012, and held the position of head triathlon coach at Life Time Fitness, Inc. a publicly traded national health club chain.

Jacobson has been a competitive triathlete since 1988 and continues to compete at the elite masters level. Excellent Reference Book - problems with Kindle Version

This is not the sort of book that makes for bedtime reading but the info is sound and very well explained. I really appreciated the amount of detail it contained and felt like it had some great exercises. These are not exercises you could not get on the web or find on your own but it is wonderful to have them all in one place. It is complete - and you could easily develop a program for either your strength training or spot type of strength exercises that you do because of injury using this book. BE WARNED KINDLE USERS - This book in Kindle Version has shut down my Kindle Fire or caused it to freeze over 20 times. It does not happen with any other book and it has consistently happened with this one. No star deduction - just wanted to note that for you.

Great Reference Book

I use Coach Troy's spinerval series & grabbed this book when I saw him associated w/ it. Simple in design yet gives great detail into the inter-relationship of training, what muscle groups need what type of training, what sports benefits from what training & even gives great advise on stretching & core training. A must have for not just the triathlete but anyone who wants to learn how to & what to train to be the athlete they want to become. Highly recommend it!

Book is helpful overall but so wordy! It uses all these technicial words and repeats the same things over and over but with different words each time. It becomes redundant after a while so I would recommend buying a book that is more direct, succint, and straight to the point. Otherwise, it provides a good general overview of the food service industry. Quite technical as well.

Reading Poetry is a comprehensive, accessible and extremely effective guide to the arts of reading, analysing and enjoying poetry. From the opening chapter, which examines assumptions about what poetry might be, successive chapters map a path that takes the reader from the basics of simple appreciation to an understanding of the often complex theoretical and historical contexts that enrich any appreciation of poetry.

Since Georges Melies's Voyage to the Moon (1902), science fiction movies have speculated about what life in other places and times would be like. Under editor Annette Kuhn's direction, the contributors to Alien Zone 2 have taken it upon themselves to think out loud about how "space" works in sci-fi movies like Brazil, Blade Runner, Total Recall, Metropolis, and the Alien series. The way these films structure cities, conceptualize culture, and imagine psyches generally falls, it turns out, into a category that UCLA professor Vivian Sobchak calls "future noir," featuring terrifying visions of cities in which a faceless multinational power sits atop thrillingly disenfranchised lumps of humanity. Distressing as this scenario sounds, most of the writers take it as an opportunity to reinvigorate our sense of the possibilities of the present, whether political, aesthetic, or otherwise. Writing about race, women, cyborgs, or consumer-culture, they key in on the genius in these movies that has at once invented a three-dimensional world and performed a kind of radical keratotomy on our own vision of things. This book deals with science fiction and the cinema and how they helped each other develop over the decades. With chapters on bodybuilders, the internet, cities, crazy machines, and how new technology has changed how we make movies and how the movies present technology you can't help but look at science fiction in the cinema with a completely different light.
