A compelling read for Zanzibaris and those interested in the history of East Africa

I am so pleased that this memoir has been published on Amazon. I read it years ago when it was available from the author. It is an honest and confronting history of what really happened to Zanzibar during the time of turbulent politics in the late 1950's and the revolutionary period of the 1960's. The suffering of Zanzibaris from the brutal regime of Karume and the following despots is told. Here are the facts from a man who remembered, from a man who suffered in prison for many years, who was tortured. It is arguable that the 1964 revolution in Zanzibar was in fact an invasion by mainland parties with the support of the President Nyerere. Whatever the real manipulators in the case Zanzibaris suffered for many years. Of course, this history is not taught nowadays - the incumbent revolutionary government has made sure that history is twisted. If you have an interest in the history of Zanzibar, this short book is a compelling read.

Too short, even for a cliffhanger

I picked this up before realizing that I had read a previous short book by this author. I mention that because if I had realized, I most likely wouldn't have read this one, because in the previous one, there was way too much plot packed into less than 25 pages. This one is almost like that, but I'm glad I read it anyway. It was much better written than the other one, and with better characters. I understand that it was meant to be short, and continued in another book, but I think that this first book should've been more about character development; there were too many questions unanswered about who these people were and why they behaved the way that they did. For instance, Sam, the Omega says that he once tried to make the world think he was an Alpha. Was this because he'd actually believed it at one time? If so, why? His BF, Tom, motivated him and "made him a better man". How, exactly? And Tom was an Alpha, but towards the end, Sam said he guessed his money & love weren't enough for Tom. Is Tom mooching off of Sam? What Alpha does that? Who is this guy? How'd they meet? And clearly, they weren't mates if Tom was able to betray Sam, so why were they together?

I would've liked more background on Edward Drake, as well. And if Anderson was an Alpha, how was he allowed to not only be a sniveling wimp, but one with such a deplorable sense of personal hygiene? And interestingly enough, my biggest question was: who was the blonde in the bed? Sam says he wore a suit. Was he another intern, one of Sam's coworkers? Ms. Quinn is actually a very good writer, but limiting herself to such short works is what's tripping her up. If she would allow a book to be at least 50+ pages, then there would probably be better characterization and fewer plot holes. However, I am looking forward to seeing how the Drake-Sam-Tom situation is about to be played out.

Good, but new installments should come more quickly

It's been a while since I read this, so I posted the above from memory. I actually enjoyed it, and I can deal with some short-term primary erotica (a la Jade K. Scott). My biggest issue the length of time between installments. I know 33 pages takes longer to write, edit and publish than it does to read, but I feel like that's something that needs to be taken into consideration when doing these serialized works. I enjoyed this piece and was interested in book two and how the boyfriend would react, since I greatly disliked him. But by the time it comes out I fear I'll have moved on and that's unfortunate.

Cliffhangers should be illegal...

This was a cliffhanger ending to beat all. I really wish I had read the reviews first. The writing itself was enough to get you hooked so much that you didn't even notice how quickly it ended. The plot played out to fast and it ended too quickly, however that doesn't mean it's not a good read. I am disappointed that with it being so short that the author only seems to update 3 times a year which again had i know I wouldn't have read it despite it being a good read. Still because it was a good read I gave it 5 stars. I would like to see better character development not just dive right in and oh look a huge cliffhanger for a year.

what this book means to me...

I am a university student now, and looking back on the events of my childhood that shaped my life, I have to include this book. Never before had anything stuck in my head and stayed with me so much. I have led a full and rich life, but it is fuller and richer than would otherwise be due to the thing this book did to me. Many books, good and otherwise, operate by leaving readers either fulfilled - as in comedies - or unfulfilled - as in tragedies. Very rarely does a book manage to successfully wield both. Though it must be odd to find this in a book intended for a younger audience, I think it is one of the best things that can happen to a child. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the reader is forced to reflect on it, by sheer writing ability and quality of story. Suddenly, a child must both recognize the tragedy and the comedy, and feel it buzzing in their brain for years. I never thought about what I read before. I never thought much about anything, just doing what seemed the proper thing to do. After this book, I began to really think. Thank you, Mr. Alexander, for giving the youth of the world this book. You touch lives, and shape minds more than most teachers, and on a much larger scale. I will never forget the magician, the bucket of water, or Lukas Kasha. I will be thinking of them on my death bed. They have become a part of my psyche. Oh, yeah, buy this book. I strongly recommend it for children 3rd-7th grade, and anyone else in the market for a good read. If I could give it five more stars, I would.

One of the Best!

This is an absolutely enjoyable book. Lukas Kasha is a young man who claims the title of the town laze- when a magician sends him to another land and he's the new king of this land. Lukas Kasha much grow up, learn to govern, and stick to his morals in a kingdom of very few morals. (Killing is the norm for many of the people in this new land.) The plot is fast paced and the characters are fun. It is easy to get swept up in reading this book and loose all sence of time. Wonderful. I particularly liked the lessons Lukas learns during his adventure and how he takes them right away and puts them into place in his life. I also liked how he tried to do right by people even though encouraged not to and the easier way would be to not help the people he did help. Truly a great lesson in how everything that you put out, you get back ten fold.

"According to the Hebrew Bible, God made the world with words," Kushner writes. "Not only are words the instrument of creation, in Judaism they are the primary reality itself." According to this belief, Kushner proceeds to meditate and play with spiritually charged words such as "Love," "Water," and some surprising choices such as "Garbage." Each short essay ends with a kavanah, or meditative exercise, designed to "help the reader 'live in the word.'" wisdom and beauty

There is so much meaning hidden in Hebrew words, and this book is a wonderful beginning to the study of the depth and spirituality of the Hebrew language. Each word discussed is a life lesson that can be used and practiced starting today. The lesson of each word can be read over and over - and new insights are revealed. This book is by my bed - along with the companion book by Rabbi Kushner, The Book of Letters. By the way, you do not need to be able to read Hebrew to appreciate these beautiful books.

insightful disscussion of words

This book is full of insights and wisdom of terms we use to talk of spiritual growth and life. For example the word redemption, Kushner relates to exchange and tells a story of a childhood memory of his job of pasting green stamps into booklets to be exchanged for something useful, in spiritual talk it becomes taking what keeps us in bondage and exchanging that for what makes us a free man. Very insightful - good book.
