Instructions:

1) Apply base coat and let dry. 2) Using one color of nail art polish, paint a series of vertical and horizontal lines scattered across the nail plate. Go for crisscrossing lines in a “t” shape. 3) Repeat with each nail art polish color until you have filled the whole nail plate. 4) Let dry and apply top coat.

great for beginning your nail art adventure

I got this book as a gift. I have owned other diy nail books in the past. This one gives you a break down of the nail anatomy, nail tools, application, polish colors to go with your skin tone, and also craft store shopping and measurements for rhinestones and glitter.
The DIY photos are nice, but some of the applications seem a bit sloppy and bad color combo choices too.
Overall this is a very entertaining and informative book. Great for beginners looking for a place to start.

Tedious, depressing stories, unenlightening

I forced myself to read to the end, hoping for some redeeming message that would explain why this book is worthy of a Nobel,prize; the take-home message: life in a poor town is, not surprisingly, depressing. I did not like any character in the book, and did not find any of them sympathetic, and it ended abruptly, with a very weak link between Rose and the recently introduced character, Ralph, who apparently had a significant impact on Rose's life. I do not recommend this book.

Masterful short story collection

I don't even LIKE short stories. I always turn the last page over, and go, `Huh? Where's the rest of it?' But I make an exception for some authors, and Alice Munro is one of them. The Beggar Maid is a collection of stories that verges on some vague new definition of The Novel. It's full of unexpected time leaps in time and even more unexpected transformations of the constant characters. It's all a bit mysterious, confusing, suggestive - and altogether exhilarating. Munro weaves, picks apart, reweaves, then interweaves these stories about two women over a span of 40 years. They are prudish and suspicious Flo, and Rose, her stepdaughter, an awkward pathetic creature who somehow pulls herself out of her stultifying home town and embarks on her own life out in the big bad world.

One of the best books of the last quarter century

Alice Munro's "The Beggar Maid" is probably the best collection of short stories I've evr read, though their interconnected nature makes it seem like you're reading a novel. In either case, it shows the trademark of all good literature: it touches you, deeply.
Alice Munro may very well be the best short story writer alive today. Comparisons to Chekhov are not far-fetched. The title story, "Royal Beatings," and several others are masterpieces of the form. Munro's writing shows a wisdom and a psychological depth possessed only by the most accomplished artists and students of human nature. Not to mention her prose: spell-binding (I would read the Yellow Pages front to back if Ms. Munro penned them).

Belverd E. Needles, Jr., received his BBA and MBA degrees from Texas Tech University and his PhD degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He teaches financial accounting, managerial accounting, and auditing at DePaul University, where he is an internationally recognized expert in international accounting and education. He has published in leading journals and is the author or editor of more than 20 books and monographs. His current research relates to international financial reporting, performance measurement, and corporate governance of high-performance companies in the United States, Europe, India, and Australia. His textbooks are used throughout the world and have received many awards, including (in 2008) the McGuffey Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Texas Tech University, the Illinois CPA Society Outstanding Educator Award and its Life-Time Achievement Award, the Joseph A. Silvoso Faculty Award of Merit from the Federation of Schools of Accountancy, the Ledger & Quill Award of Merit, and the Ledger & Quill Teaching Excellence Award. He was named Educator of the Year by the American Institute of CPAs, Accountant of the Year for Education by the national honorary society Beta Alpha Psi, and Outstanding International Accounting Educator by the American Accounting Association. He received the Excellence in Teaching Award from DePaul University.

Marian Powers received her B.S. degree from Chicago State University and her Ph.D. degree from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In addition to the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, she has taught financial accounting at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and at the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. Internationally recognized as a dynamic teacher in executive education, she specializes in teaching nonfinancial managers how to read and understand internal and external financial reports, including the impact of international financial reporting standards (IFRS). Her current research relates to international financial reporting, performance measurement, and corporate governance of high-performance companies in the United States, Europe, India, and Australia. Her research has been published in leading journals. Her textbooks, coauthored with Belverd E. Needles, Jr., are used throughout the world and have received many awards, including the Textbook Excellence Award and the McGuffey Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association. She has also coauthored three interactive multimedia software products. She currently serves on the Board of the CPA Endowment Fund of Illinois and is immediate past-chair of the Board of Governors of the Winnetka Community House. She is a member of International Association of Accounting Education and Research, and Illinois CPA Society. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Illinois CPA Society, the Educational Foundation of Women in Accounting, and both the national as well as Chicago chapters of ASWA.

Profound book by an intelligent cardinal!

A Godly Humanism is the last book written by by Francis Cardinal George before his death. In this book, Cardinal George calls on us to understand and appreciate the human relationships with God and each other. He begins his book by talking about the intellectual tradition of the Catholic Church, how it has grown, evolved, and taken shape. He also explains that this intellectual tradition is not just important for the Church, but for society as a whole. This leads us to the whole "faith and reason" argument that we have all heard and read countless times. The Church, unlike other Christian churches does not put these two things against each other, but embraces both.

Chapter Two talks about Catholics who become intellectuals and intellectuals who become Catholics. The chief example in this chapter is, of course, St. Augustine. So many of us in our formative years are like St. Augustine. We go to college. We listen to many different thoughts and ideas. We absorb so much knowledge. But then, we have to parse through it and decide where ultimate Truth lies, and that is with God and His Church. Chapter Three delves into what makes Catholics different than Protestants, namely Tradition. Because of this Tradition, we can be assured of access to God due to things such as apostolic succession and the fact that our Church was founded after Jesus' Resurrection. The rest of the book focuses on topics such as living in a post-Christian society (very useful); education to integrate culture and religion; how to integrate Vatican II; and what recent popes have done for the Catholic intellectual tradition.

Reading through this book, it's easy to be reminded how brilliant of a mind that Cardinal George had. He pulled from numerous teachers both ancient (St. Augustine) and recent (Pope Francis) to demonstrate his point that the Catholic Church is built upon a relationship with God and each other. God is continually reaching out to us and showing us His presence and love. He reached out to us with the Holy Spirit when, the Holy Spirit worked through the Apostles, and he continues to reach out to us through their successors as well. Cardinal George reminds us of this and and the untold graces that God continues to shower on us, if we only let him, This was truly a beautiful book and is a fitting final book for the brilliance that was his life. Highly recommended!

Wimer Hazenberg: - Graduated in Artificial Intelligence at the RUG in 2007.
- Co-founded Booreiland in 2003. Booreiland started as a graphic design agency, from which is gradually shifted towards the web, now being a mature web design agency working on heavy Flash websites.
- Co-started meta products in 2008, an extra discipline within Booreiland, involving the so-called tactile web (consumer products connected to the web).

Menno Huisman: Studied Industrial Design Engineering. Or in more common terms, product design.
Co-founder and Creative Director at Booreiland: a creative design studio from Amsterdam. It is specialized in designing websites, print campaigns and Meta Products. Meta Products are the next generation consumer products, which are all web connected. By combining the offline and the online world, Booreiland wants to make the web just a little bit more meaningful to all of us.

SARA C�RDOBA RUBINO:
Sara was born in Mexico City and did a bachelor in Industrial Design at the Universidad Aut�noma Metropolitana.
Having the urge to explore beyond Mexican borders, Sara flew off to The Netherlands in 2008 and did a master’s degree in Strategic Product Design at the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at Delft University of Technology.
This programme aims at the strategic stages that precede the actual new product and service development phases. Now, 2013, Sara applies these skills at Dutch design studio Booreiland as researcher and project manager. She is responsible for the foundation of Network Focused Design, a design approach Booreiland
uses for its projects.

Great articulation of new product thinking

A lot of new products are hitting the market that blur the divide between the physical world and the web, yet with the potential of these products and services very few people are thinking about why something should be Internet enabled. We're all familiar with the failed products - the classic Internet fridge for example - Meta-Products tries to articulate a way of thinking about digitally led physical products and to catalogue the new skills and techniques we require as designers to do this.

There is a significant portion of User Centred Design within this book so those who are familiar with this process could skip it yet their explanation and examples of Network Focussed Design is an excellent articulation on this process.

Excellent Book

More than 40 years ago, I participated oceanographic surveys with a specialty in marine geophysics and published some of the research in the plate tectonic literature at the time. Having worked primarily in economic geology during the past 20 years I was interested in a readable up-to-date review of plate tectonics. This book was a very pleasant surprise. It is very readable, comprehensive, up-to-date and contains great illustrations to support the narrative. I highly recommend it.

A very good overview for a person with some knowledge of geology, but who is not an expert in the field. The different kinds of subduction and effects on the continental crust are explained very well, plus the kinds of metamorphism associated with subducted oceanic crust. Many examples, from around the world, are used to illustrate the text.
