Collective Courage: A History of African American Cooperative Economic Thought and Practice, by Jessica Gordon Nembhard

In Collective Courage, Jessica Gordon Nembhard chronicles African American cooperative business ownership and its place in the movements for Black civil rights and economic equality. Not since W. E. B. Du Bois’s 1907 Economic Co-operation Among Negro Americans has there been a full-length, nationwide study of African American cooperatives. Collective Courage extends that story into the twenty-first century. Many of the players are well known in the history of the African American experience: Du Bois, A. Philip Randolph and the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, Nannie Helen Burroughs, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Jo Baker, George Schuyler and the Young Negroes’ Co-operative League, the Nation of Islam, and the Black Panther Party. Adding the cooperative movement to Black history results in a retelling of the African American experience, with an increased understanding of African American collective economic agency and grassroots economic organizing.

To tell the story, Gordon Nembhard uses a variety of newspapers, period magazines, and journals; co-ops’ articles of incorporation, minutes from annual meetings, newsletters, budgets, and income statements; and scholarly books, memoirs, and biographies. These sources reveal the achievements and challenges of Black co-ops, collective economic action, and social entrepreneurship. Gordon Nembhard finds that African Americans, as well as other people of color and low-income people, have benefitted greatly from cooperative ownership and democratic economic participation throughout the nation’s history.

Review

“The word ‘pathbreaking’ should not be used casually, but this is, in fact, a pathbreaking book. There is nothing like it. Jessica Gordon Nembhard’s study of Black cooperatives opens a door on a critical aspect of Black history in general and cooperative history in particular—a door very hard to open, given the challenges and difficulties with records and sources. What she has found behind the door is subjected to inspiring yet tough-minded analysis. The long trajectory of development Gordon Nembhard describes and the direction she illuminates offer profoundly important guidance as we enter an era of increasingly difficult economic and political challenges.”

—Gar Alperovitz, Lionel R. Bauman Professor of Political Economy, University of Maryland, author of What Then Must We Do? Straight Talk About the Next American Revolution

“Collective Courage is an important addition to the body of work examining efforts to achieve economic development by African Americans. This book represents the culmination of Jessica Gordon Nembhard’s long-standing and pathbreaking research in this area. The publication of Collective Courage will be warmly welcomed by scholars and community activists searching for development strategies that circumvent increasingly globalized predatory economic networks. The historical and contemporary examples of cooperative ventures discussed in the book will unquestionably serve as useful models for pursuing sustainable approaches to community development.”

—James B. Stewart, The Pennsylvania State University

“Jessica Gordon Nembhard's excellent book provides a refreshing antidote to the straitjacket on our imagination of better ways to organize our economic lives. Our economic lives can be both just and productive. Gordon Nembhard cogently demonstrates that black cooperative models offer a non-utopian route toward meeting both goals.”

—William Darity Jr., Duke University

“Collective Courage makes a very strong case for the historical and continuing importance of cooperatives as a strategy for African American economic, social, and political development. Given the emphasis on pooled resources, cooperative economic development is an approach that gets around the constraints of limited wealth among African American individuals and families. Moreover, this volume clearly demonstrates that cooperatives have ‘joint outputs’—that is, in addition to producing a particular good or service, a cooperative frequently produces other valuable social services, civic involvement, leadership development, and managerial expertise that is transferable to activities beyond the particular cooperative enterprise. Jessica Gordon Nembhard concludes that cooperatives have been successful in the past and also present the opportunity for expanded self-reliance in the future.

“The originality of this book is substantial. I am unaware of any similar work. This volume shows that Gordon Nembhard is a leading scholar on the role of cooperative economic development activities among African Americans. This well-organized text will be useful to general interest readers, undergraduate and graduate students, policy makers, and practitioners.”

—Patrick Mason, Florida State University

“Though the cooperative movement in the United States is one of the largest in the world, it is routinely ignored or marginalized by observers, particularly in the academic world. This book, based on years of multidimensional research in many sources by Jessica Gordon Nembhard, fills a particularly glaring gap in our understanding of that movement. It carefully documents how many African Americans have explored the cooperative option over the years, in the process making a major contribution to the fields of cooperative studies and African American studies.”

—Ian MacPherson, University of Victoria

“In her inspiring book Collective Courage, Jessica Gordon Nembhard has compiled the most complete history to date of the cooperative economic struggles of African Americans from early times until now. Following in the profound footsteps of W. E. B. Du Bois, she has illuminated the historical roots of African American economic cooperation and thus made a vital contribution to the knowledge so badly needed today for African Americans and all people to come together in mutual aid and, by their common efforts, rise above all economic obstacles.”

—John Curl, author of For All The People

“[A] fascinating history of African American cooperatives.”

—Bernard Marszalek, CounterPunch

“Collective Courage is truly a book to be celebrated and not merely reviewed. A book to read and re-read, one that gives voice to a long neglected and embattled history, and which can contribute massively to new and far more democratized and humane forms of social and economic life than those to which we are accustomed or resigned.”

—Len Krimerman, Grassroots Economic Organizing (GEO) Newsletter

“With the 'free market' increasingly predatory toward poor and working poor people, seeking to turn poverty itself into a profit center, Jessica Gordon Nembhard's book couldn't be more timely. If cooperative economic arrangements have any future we must first learn their vital past.”

—Adam Haslett, In These Times

“[Collective Courage is] full of suggestions and lessons that can be used by any group seeking to empower itself through cooperative organization. The range of concepts covered—from the Antigonish method of development, the needs of cooperative development and the impact of co-ops on community development—gives the book applications well beyond the badly needed African-American cooperative history.

“. . . The history of African-American cooperative practice, as documented in this volume, clearly demonstrates how a group of oppressed people, in the face of pain and grief, persisted relentlessly to provide themselves economic independence, and political freedom, but also, thankfully, a model, and lessons of development, inclusion and diversity that can benefit all of us.”

—Thomas W. Gray, Rural Cooperatives Magazine

“This elaborate historical portrait of the cooperative movement in the African American community is an important academic reference. Nembhard articulates a business model rooted in the values of a community, which will resonate well with those who work to create community-centered enterprises. To do so, the author delves into the past of the movement that generated this model, documenting the historical experience of a community working hard to create an economic base to support long-term growth and social mobility. The book illustrates how social structures and deliberate acts frustrated or destroyed early attempts to create this economic base rooted in the community's values, and it also extends this historical chronicle to the present to help readers understand why the economic base of the community is still so fragile. For those wishing to turn back the page of history to explore collaborative, community-based economic development, this book will offer a window of insight, a template for action, and a framework grounded in African American culture and values. ‘Lift as you climb,’ a traditional phrase reflecting one of these many values, serves as a powerful call to readers for past and future community empowerment and growth.”

—B. P. Corrie, Choice

“This work encourages readers to view African American economic and political history through a new lens. Information from primary source materials provides a unique perspective on a critical but underexamined aspect of African American resistance to economic arrangements that have created and perpetuated racialized disparities in wealth and points out that this resistance began well before the Civil War.”

—Amanda Tillotson, Social Service Review

Great history of building black economic power
By Alfredo Carlos
Excellent book, with an tremendous amount of excellently researched history. Considering my difficulties in accessing such information for Latinos this is an extremely important contribution to the history and politics of black political and economic power. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in thinking about poltics beyond voting or civic engagement and wants to move into how Blacks attempted to build economic power historically

This is such an excellent story to teach youngsters about "differences" between us (and how they can be strengths!)
By Grandma Zizzy
How often to we try to teach our youngsters how differences can make us special? When I was about 11 years old, my mother took my three younger sisters, a brother and I to see one of the re-releases of the 1941 Disney film this book is based on, and oh how this story touched me! I'd endured quite a bit of teasing myself in the middle of second grade, when I moved to a new city and shortly after became the only one in the class who needed glasses - I related to poor Jumbo Jr., whose much larger than normal ears caused him to be nicknamed "Dumbo".

I still love the gentleness of Mrs. Jumbo and how she tried to comfort Dumbo (reminded me of my own mother's comforting), the loyalty of his mouse friend Timothy, and no one cheered louder than I did as he became the star of the circus when he discovered he could use those big ears as wings and fly!

This was such a sweet story to prompt a conversation with my grandson about the differences between people as well, how wrong it is to ridicule others for those differences, and about loyalty to friends. We would've loved to have been able to afford DVDs of all of the old Disney movie classics, but these Little Golden Books do a pretty nice job of condensing feature length films into short, 24 page stories while still conveying the lessons. I'm so glad we added this book to our collection!

Still Robinson, but ...
By Thomas O. Gray
Kim Stanley Robinson is a phenomenal writer, but here he's tried to do the impossible: portray the story of catastrophic global warming largely through a handful of deeply realized characters. In some respects, it seems as though he slights the most important character--the Earth. His gift for creating characters has not deserted him, nor his ability to write engaging prose that draws the reader in--40 Signs of Rain is a truly enjoyable book to read despite its flaws. It's just that using a global disaster as the starting point for a meditation on the nature of science and the American political system doesn't work. If you like Robinson, or you like finely drawn characters, go for it--you won't be disappointed. If you're looking for a novel (or trilogy) that truly captures the magnitude of catastrophic climate change, I regret to say this isn't it.

If you like this book: you're likely to enjoy most of the Robinson canon (my personal favorite is Pacific Edge, but the Mars books are also absorbing).

Climate Change Here Now
By Seachranaiche
No one can write this stuff like Robinson. Forty Signs of Rain begins a new trilogy about abrupt climate change. In the book (as in the real world) this is not some vague worry for the future, but something that is going on all around us right now, just waiting for a trigger event before things get really bad. In Forty Signs of Rain, the characters are real people living real lives. They respond to political, environmental, and domestic pressures that are identical to those we all witness every day, so Robinson's plot is very real and tangible throughout.

Don't expect Hollywood disaster themes in this book, climate change isn't working that way. Rather, the characters get on with their lives and struggles while subtle hints of what's to come appear here and there. Throughout the book, the science is rock solid. The only criticism I have is that this is the first Robinson I have read in which the opening book clearly requires a sequel. Forty Signs of Rain does not stand alone unless your expectations are very low. Normally I resent this from authors and publishers, but Robinson is too good at what he writes; I will give him a break.

Vapid, Shallow
By mtspace
Science fiction has a reputation for being shallow. Even some of its most famous writers such as Asimov wrote books whose principal interest lay in the technological view of the future. In Forty Signs of Rain Robinson has managed to convolve shallow writing, a set of not very empathetic and unfocused characters, and a plot that plods rather tediously to a climax that makes the middle inning stretch of a baseball game seem nail-biting in comparison. And I am not a baseball fan.

I do give Robinson an extra star for trying to bring a little more attention to the risks associated with global warming, but given the current political landscape, I'd say he underestimated the size of the fictional devastation that would be required to change national policy by a factor of 100 or 1000. Such a catastrophe might be farther out on the time horizon, but it is not out of the question. So the book strikes me as a lost opportunity. The next guy who tries to write a Sci-Fi book on the subject will get turned down because 'It's been done and it didn't work." Too bad for all of us.

It was the beginning of an 18-month journey into blood and chaos. In this action-packed page-turner, Ashcroft reveals the dangers of his adrenalin-fueled life as a security contractor in Baghdad, where private soldiers outnumber non-U.S. Coalition forces in a war that is slowly being privatized. From blow-by-blow accounts of days under mortar bombardment to revelations about life operating deep within the Iraqi community, Ashcroft shares the real, unsanitized story of the war in Iraq direct from the front line.

Good on You, Mate!
By skyrat
I read a lot of military books and this is one of the best. Capt. Ashcroft has managed to weld action, suspense, humor and political insight into one great tale of modern military conflict. The gruesomeness and tension of life and combat in Iraq is compellingly told. In addition, there are extremely humerous portions that will have you laughing to the point of tears. One caution however: if you're a "Hank the Yank" that hasn't spent time in Great Britain, Australia, or Canada, beware of the "C" word. To me, it just added to the authenticity of the story. What do you think guys are saying to each other in combat situations - Aw shucks?

I would rate this book on par with Mark Bowden's "Black Hawk Down" - one of the best I've read.

Good Book on Modern Combat
By Amazon Customer
This is a well written book on modern combat in the middle east. In addition to telling a riveting story, Mr. Ashcroft provides some unique (though often clearly biased) perspectives on the actions of the Coalition Forces in Iraq. Overall, it is a fun and exciting read. I'm only giving it four stars for two reasons: 1) the author struggles to make clear his view of the U.S. military in Iraq. Some passages in the book shower praise on them, while others offer nothing but harsh criticism. He says "I now had the utmost respect for all of them," then turns around and accuses them of being overly anxious killers. 2) The book feels like it was written in a hurry. The writing is high quality and intelligent, but the story feels rushed. Its almost as if the publisher tried to repackage an honest and in depth telling of one man's powerful experiences into a fast-paced, shoot 'em up, action thriller. This may account for #1. Anyway, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in military history, current events, or just plain fun.

A hell of a read...
By Travis B. Johnson
I'm US Military and have done two tours in iraq, having talked with private contractors over there and for a time wanted to do the same as them, but decided to stay in the military, though I still have a interest in doing that sort of work...

Capt. Ashford gives a very, very interesting and insightful look into the world of private contractors, giving a sometimes very humerous account of his time in iraq to a sometimes very bleak look of things as they were when he was there.

From Capt. Ashford and his fellow englishman's hilarious banter and rivalry between themselves and their south arfican team-members, who's constant "ja ja..." always manages to bring a chuckle in true afrikaner style, to his own insights into going crazy at a office job and wanting to get back to what he did best and get into the action, to having to deal with their sometimes idiotic and highstrung clients and iraqi co-workers, this book is at times hilarious, at times dark and dismal, and at other times filled with action for any war junkie to enjoy.

People tend to look at people like Capt. Ashford as the dirty, evil mercenary who is willing to do anything for a buck, when infact most are family men with loving children, simply trying to support themselves and their families using the skills they learned in their military career's and putting them to applicable use.

People go to college or technical schools to learn the knowledge and gain the skills they need to get paying jobs in the real world, same as these men but they get the stereotype of blood-thirsty mercenaries.....strange how no one ever chastises the scientist or doctor who is suppose to help people with the skills they have and then goes off and bio-engineers diseases and chemical weapons, nuclear weapons, and weapons that can kill more in two minutes than these men could ever kill in a lifetime.....

My bantering asside, I highly reccommned this book to any and all interested in this aspect of the world we live in, the life of a private military contractor.

Impressive Debut Novel
By E.E. Lee
An impressive debut novel from the author of one of my favorite short stories, which I think fans of the sci-fi and heroic quest genres are sure to enjoy. The story revolves around Enoch, the last of a once powerful race of technomancers as he seeks his destiny amidst the post-apocalyptic ruins of a high-tech earth. Along the way he encounters a host of delightfully imaginative biologically-tailored and cybernetically-enhanced terrors that inhabit the world of the Silicon Covenant.

I thought the pacing was good, action was great, and the characters were memorable. I particularly liked Ric the undead ex-rock & roller from a long forgotten era. At times the world-building felt a little forced, but I suspect it is because the author has a much larger story planned for us, of which this is but the opening act. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.

I've been reading sci-fi and fantasy for many years and found it an altogether enjoyable read.

but I really enjoyed this book
By Michael R. Green
Ok I'm a nerd, so I'm biased when reading science fiction and fantasy, but I really enjoyed this book. It started out a bit slow, but the way the author built suspension as the plot marched forward, and the way the characters unfolded, it felt more like enjoying a long, three course meal than just waiting an hour to be seated (I like food too). While some reviewers felt that the 'monsters' and world felt too much like a video game, I really enjoyed the fresh take on what makes a monster, the way nanotechnology fused with runaway, radiation-infused biology and genetic engineering; it took the trite, conventional monster and genetically-engineered human/cyborg and combined them into something that felt unique, and I think gives the author leeway into more creativity. At first I felt like the main characters abilities, while exciting, we're fairly limiting in a world that seemed to teem with characters much more powerful, but by the end of the book it felt like there was a lot of potential to go in some exciting directions. I also like the fact that the author didn't make the main character too powerful, I feel like there was a good balance maintained. Overall there was enough plot revealed to be interesting, with enough mystery to make me anxious to find out more in the next book. The action was plentiful enough that I didn't get bored, and I enjoyed the balance of raw, physicality and mental ability. While I would have rated it a 4 star book a quarter of the way through, by the end I'm just desperately wishing the sequel were out already!

Genre bending at its finest.
By Stephen Kolomyjec
A excellent book, cannot wait for the sequel. The story was a refreshing blend of scifi and fantasy elements set in the far off future. a distant future where "the bombs have already fallen and a bit of magic has returned to the land". Although in this far flung adventure much of the "magic" is the product of remnants of long forgotten technology.

Fans of diverse mythologies such as the vampire hunter D novels and movies, as well as adventure time should find this book enjoyable!
