Good for beginners. Faint printing problem. Somewhat outdated in 2016.

Pretty good resource for a beginner to Python's data analysis libraries. This book is not for a Python beginner. Although Wes McKinney wrote Pandas, I feel that the Pandas part of the book is somewhat outdated or redundant in 2016. There is an excellent online resource maintained by Wes and other key contributors that is up-to-date, and, in my opinion, has better content for beginners learning Pandas. Because of several different contributors' perspectives, I find the examples and explanations better than those in the book. In 2012, when this book was published, that online resource may not have been as good. I found the Pandas Time Series and Financial Applications chapters interesting, but they are also replicated on the website. So the book was improved upon by the author's own website (with the help of other contributors). :-)

The remaining 1/4 of the book had very useful concentrated intro to NumPy, Advanced NumPy, and Python Essentials reference. This book does not cover the newer development of R function calls from Python. In my opinion, R is winning the R vs Pandas argument due to ggplot2 and statistical learning professors publishing code first in R. Since R is now easy to use from within Python, Pandas might not get as much use. But it's still useful to know how to use Pandas as part of a data analyst's toolkit.

I also want to warn buyers about faint printing on several physical copies of this book. I bought from Amazon AND directly from O'Reilly Media in trying to get a physical book that had good, solid printing on all pages. This was not possible. The physical book from O'Reilly had even fainter/worse printing than the version I got from Amazon. Better to save your money and just get with the eBook version if you are OK with that, which you can usually find cheaper online. O'Reilly puts on excellent conferences, but may be getting out of the printed book business. I guess most programmers buy eBooks now. I just find eBooks difficult to deal with when it comes to dense, technical books. I am fine with eBooks for fiction or more narrative non-fiction such as economics, popular science, or history.

This is an excellent book, assuming you like the author's approach to computation/data. This is in a sense also a review for pandas. I should emphasize I am NOT a programmer, in the proper sense. I am a (computational) physicist and have transitioned all of my data storage/analysis to pandas, for reasons I'll explain.

A large portion of my work is "exploratory", where I try out many different ideas, hoping something sticks. I've wasted a large amount of time hacking away trying to piece together a somewhat complicated calculation on fairly abstract data sets, only to eventually lose track of what physics I'm trying to do because of how sloppy things get. Again, I am not a programmer! Computation is a tool to me, and time spent trying to make a tool work is time away from the actual job.

Though I have only used it in earnest for a few months now, Pandas has increased my productivity tremendously. The organization/philosophy behind the program is amazing. Often (though less and less, thankfully) I find myself reverting to my old habits of working with a sloppy mixture of dicts,np.arrays, and classes, because I feel like I can do it faster/easier than setting it up in pandas. I am never right. Once I set up the problem in pandas, everything I could possibly want to do flows naturally.

If you work with physical data and perform relatively complex calculations/transformations on it, I strongly recommend pandas and this book. Regarding the book, I will only say that by reading the author's (of the code and book!) perspective you quickly gain an appreciation for how powerful pandas can be.

Pandas is a great package, and this book serves a good beginner's book to pandas and also to python.

However, it would be better if concept and conventions in pandas can be introduced first, and later comes with more specifics, applications of using pandas to solve data tasks, it would be better. Some examples are good, but feels taking too long to get the understanding the concepts.

Mi opinión puede ser un tanto subjetiva, amo la trilogía y este libro complementa un poco Divergente. Cuatro es un personaje muy rico y resulta muy agradable poder ver la historia a través de sus ojos y así conocerlo mejor. No es indispensable leerlo, pero para los amantes de Divergente un plus muy placentero.

Recomendaría el libro a todos los lectores de la saga de "Divergente" porque tal vez encuentren detalles que no conocían de la historia anterior.
He decidido quitarle una estrella porque me parece que en ocasiones la historia da unos saltos tremendos sin que haya una explicación satisfactoria para ello.

Love to cook - love to eat even more!

OK...I'm not a big fan of Martha, every time I see her on TV I can't help but wonder where the "creativity" comes from...she seems so bland. What I like about the cookbook are some of the "101" recipes, for basics with zip. The meatloaf is amazing, and my mashed potatoes are crowd pleasers. What I don't like is that there is no estimate on prep time, whether this is something good to freeze, and what would be good to serve with it, etc. So in a sense, a little outdated in presentation.

An Eclectic Collection of Martha's Favorites

I was quite excited to see this new cookbook. As I paged through all 592 pages, I was pleased to see a recipe for "Moroccan Preserved Lemons," "Tzatziki," (a cucumber sauce), "Pistachio-Honey Torrone," and "French Almond Nougat." Those are not recipes you will find just anywhere. Many collectors will enjoy this cookbook for the tantalizing tidbits of information in the headnotes alone.

The beauty of this cookbook is that it takes basic foods like "Macaroni and Cheese" and gives them a more gourmet taste. This can be a great inspiration to cooks who need some new ideas. The recipe titles of "Tarragon Limeade" and "Orange Pekoe Lemonade" had my full attention. I want to know how these recipes taste, the titles are so tantalizing.

This cookbook begins with page after page of food photographs to show you what some of the recipes will look like. The "Fresh Apricot Almond Tart" picture looks like the perfect summer dessert, the "Coconut Layer Cake" has me running to the kitchen to see if I still had a bag of coconut in the freezer. When you see the picture of the Caramel Bourbon Vanilla Sauce, you will long for a warm apple crumble to drizzle it over.

Martha has divided her book into logical chapters. You start with a few pages on Basic Kitchen Helps and then dive right into Hor D'Oeuvres, Breakfast, Breads, Soups, Salads, Vegetables, Potatoes, Pasta, Rice and Grains, Meat, Poultry, Fish and Shellfish, Vegetarian Main Courses, Desserts, Pies and Tarts, Cookies and Candy, Drinks and finally, Salsas, Sauces, Dips and More.

In some of the recipes, Martha uses ingredients, which may not be familiar, however...just like in her magazine, she does not leave you stranded. The last section of the book includes a Sources Section.

If you ever think a negative review won't sell a book, let me tell you, I bought this book because of a negative review. Yes, it is true. Sometimes that will sell a book even faster. Well, one of my fellow reviewers complained about the Macaroni and Cheese recipe being bland. So, being a investigator at heart, I had to know if it was true. After trying the recipe, I have a few theories about Martha's Recipes and the philosophy, which she perhaps might use in creating them.

After receiving this book I did see that the type was a bit smaller, but it is not smaller than most cookbooks out there. I prefer a 15-point size myself, but hardly any cookbooks cater to my desire for a larger print, so I am going to publish one myself! What I did love was the nice bold headings on the recipes, the little hints and tips and "did you know" blocks of information sprinkled throughout the pages.

When I read that someone did not like the Macaroni and Cheese 101 recipe, I had to try it. Then I read: "This is quite possibly the most popular recipe we have ever created." page 244. Wow, now I really had to try it. So, we headed off to the store to pick up 18 ounces of sharp white cheddar cheese and 5 ounces of Pecorino Romano cheese. Most macaroni and cheese recipes are better with sharp cheeses.

As I was making the recipe, I noticed a chef like quality to her cooking, but her directions needed a revamp. Not only should you start boiling the water before you start the cheese sauce, the noodles should be cooking during the other preparation steps. The recipe parts should also be divided. Had there been a heading "Topping" and "Cheese Sauce" that would have been nice. I also didn't like having the butter and cheese divided in the instructions but not in the actual ingredient listing.

When making the dish, I could feel that something might be amiss in the cheese sauce, there was way too much milk for the flour and butter. 1 cup milk to 2 tablespoons flour and 2 tablespoons butter is more traditional for a cheese sauce. Martha's recipe calls for 8 tablespoons flour to 6 tablespoons unsalted butter and 5 1/2 cups milk. That leaves the sauce in a rather soupy state as most recipes would only call for 4 cups milk. Then she recommended that the noodles be cooked strangely. It is hard to cook them the way she did, so I just cooked them until they were done. That must be the key...to undercook them so they absorb more of the sauce. The instructions read: "Cook the macaroni until the outside of the pasta is cooked and the inside is underdone, 2 to 3 minutes." page 244.

What I DID LOVE about the final result...was the topping. The cheese and bread cubes in butter was SO tasty. It was quite a lot better than just dried breadcrumbs. What did I serve it with? Lemon Pepper chicken that I found at my local store. Very tasty! They fried up fast and then you could add a green veggie if you wanted.

Well, I will continue to test more recipes. I found the Mac recipe good when I sprinkled it with freshly ground black Tellicherry peppercorns and then sprinkled it with Fleur de Sel. Now, those two things can make anything a bit better! Yes, it was more bland, but I think Martha expects you to season it to taste. The nutmeg flavor was quite good. The sauce was not as creamy, but I think if you undercooked the noodles, it would solve all problems.

I recommend this book to cooks who want some new inspiration in the kitchen. For those who are just starting to cook, you will enjoy many of the recipes, but remember to season them to taste. There is also a good reason Martha might say something, so even if it seems to go against what you are used to, try the new instructions and I bet the recipe will work.

She has won several awards, including the Governor General’s Bronze Medal and inaugural Jean Riley Senft Integrity Award. She lives in West Vancouver, British Columbia

G�rard Ch�taigneau is a photographer and former figure skater. He has been photographing figure skating for 24 years including all the Olympic Games and World Championships since 1988. His work has appeared in numerous figure skating books and calendars, and is used by international news agencies. He lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Great photographs, interesting information on the ISU Judging System

As a great figure skating fan, it is always great when a book comes out that includes Gerard Chataigneau in the list of contributors. And this one is no exception. Truly excellent pictures, showing great moments within the programms, but also directly after (like Brian Joubert showing great happiness in having finished after skating a good short programm at World's in 2010). This type of book usually focusses on the skaters only or on the competitive events in a season, but in this particular case a lot of information is provided on the ISU Judging system that is so difficult to understand for mere fans the old system was a lot easier, but admittedly rather prone to subjectivity and block judging). It is also made clear how in the last few years the focus on jumps has shifted somewhat to other elements within programmes. Really a great asset to fans.

A lucid and clear explanation of the current judging system and its impact on skating

Not only are the explanations clear, they are presented in a style that keeps you reading and inserts interesting observations that only an expert could provide. The choice of Lysacek versus Plushenko to illustrate how the system works was excellent, it reveals how a skater who did not perform a quad was able to prevail over a skater who did the quad. And it all came down to what elements were performed and when in the program. In the end, the contest was won on the basis of what was delivered. Lysacek performed well very difficult elements late in the program, using his skills to fight to the last minute, garnering points not only to come back from behind but managing to snatch victory .

It may be said that the new system allows to put more fight into the fight, Jean Senft explains how technically demanding new competitions are, and it would seem that technical demands have in no way hindered artistry - those skaters who are creative do continue to deliver spirited, attractive and innovative performances.

Jean Senft clearly explains that the ISU reviews every year how to weight elements. The fact that a base value may be changed does not mean her explanations are outdated, the system remains the same, she provides an explanation that will be valid for as long as the system will be in place, the most lucid and easy to understand explanation I have read so far.

A rush job that is now largely outdated

The author Senft takes the view that Lysaceks win without a quad was perfectly acceptable and right. It was not right and the book came out too early to include discussion of the changes the ISU made to men's skating to encourage quads and discourage regressing on jumps to focus on steps or relying on a post halfway point bonus rather than try quads. The removed a step sequence from the short program and made one of the two in the free skate have only a level one base value to be judged solely on GOE. They raised the values of quads, reduced the value of some triples, reduced how much GOE you can on triples. Mostly everything that would lead to Lysacek beating Plushenko was changed. So because of these things the book is really already outdated. So you have the outdated factor and the objectionable view of the author that quadless Lysacek was a good winner over Plushenko who did two quad/triple combinations and all the other requirements. The Olympic champions in 1998, 2002, and 2006 all did quads or multiple quads. Senft defense of quadlessness as "great strategy" is just sad. What would be next no triple axels? No triple Lutz's" Just get rid of jumps? No this book is disturbing to this fan of the sport of figure skating.

Can't argue with the quality of the pictures though. Very impressive.

But I would not suggest this book to anyone. Its POV is just disturbing to me and the book is outdated.

She's a damn good writer, and all her stories are wonderful

First off, If you haven't read a Kristi Pelton series, or book. I suggest you do it. She's a damn good writer, and all her stories are wonderful.

DIBS- A game best friends play. You call "DIBS" on a guy, and your friends can't touch him. They may search for one in close proximity, but they can't touch your DIB. When witty come backs get mixed in with DIBS, it's a laugh a minute.

From the first word to the last I was hooked. I laughed non stop at the banter, and comebacks in the first three chapters, I was almost crying from laughing. As you get to know Samantha, you know that her and her 3 best friends are glued at the hip.
Becca, is sick, and has cancer, but since Sam's divorce from her wound too damn tight cheating ex-husband, Becca sets Sam up on 4 very hilarious dates. Believe me, you will laugh so hard you will cry.

Julia aka Juls, and Kat get Sam to go on a 2 week cruise. Sam needs this cruise like we all need air to breathe. Bryan her ex is just a threatening pain in the ass, and her son Jake is her life. With the push of Becca, Sam, Kat and Juls, head out on the high seas.

With OCD, and anxiety raring their ugly faces, it takes a special guy to calm her. When she claims DIBS on Mac, her the high seas will never be the same. With so many laughs, you can't help but get sucked into the book more. By the time it hits you, you have been laughing, and now, BAM you might shed a few tears, but then you are back to laughing again.

As Mac tries with everything his has to get Sam to submit to him, it takes his best friend Blake to hook up with Juls, and their friend Cody to cozy up to Kat. Mac finally gets Sam to let her guard down, and when she does, grab the lube, the vibrators, and a couple ice cubes, because there is a whole lot of rocking going on aboard that cruise ship.

I won't go into anymore details, because, you really need to read the book.
Will Sam get past Mac's profession, and open up her heart to the man she has fallen in love with on the high seas? And will Mac change his ways just to be with Sam who is a mother, and a doctor.
Climb aboard the SS SASSY PANTS (I made that up) cruise ship, and set sail with a group of friends that will make you laugh, cry, and cheer each other on. ENJOY!!

Funny, yet touches your heart.

I started this book out laughing. Every girls bad nightmare getting out of a long relationship and every guy your friends try to hook you up with are d-bags. Samantha got out of a long relationship and her friends (Becca, Kat & Jul's) decided that going on a cruise would take her mind off things and hope she would just have fun with some guys. Right from the beginning you get Samantha's smart mouth when she is approached by a guy on the ship (who she chooses to call Thor cause of his looks as didn't catch his name.) This is when Samantha Calls dibs on him meaning his friends cant go after him always a long time joke with the girls. His real name is Mac, he is tall, Handsome and willing to give it right back to her. That is when his mission was set in place. Mac is the playboy type of guy having women throw themselves at him, she wasn't willing to surrender which made his mission to be with here. Will Sam let her guard down and let another man in to her life even just on a short trip where she never has to see him again? I smiled and couldn't get enough of this book. You will be laughing for sure, have moments of heartache and tears but most of all you will smile and just love this book. At least I did.

DIBS .... what can i say.

OMG forget book boyfriends i'm girl crushing on Sam a little, oh hell ok so yeah Mac is so book boy friend worthy and i'm more than a little crushing on Sam.
This book is a slight dash of 50 shades, and a whole lot of seriously sarcastic witted mouthy Sam.
Take a cruise of the islands, a woman called Sam who didn't know how to give up control add one hot Mac who knew how to melt a woman's panties and take control and what you have is an unbelievable fan balls to the wall tastic book.
Don't get me wrong, its not all about dom and sub stuff, there is some serious heart and flowers in there too. The book has to wanting to hug Sam for her anxiety then eye roll and groan at what flies out of her mouth while high fiving her for her sarcastic wit, then Mac. Oh boy the man who feeds of being challenged and loves the sarcastic stuff that comes from Sam's mouth. He's plagued with a don't fall in love its a fools game rules that he and Blake have but then the heart wants what the heart wants. Question is does Sam's heart really want what he's finally ready to offer. Oh hell yes, she does.
Sam finds herself and masters the F off and die attitude needed for her ex husband but the control to deal with losing a sister by choice, and gaining another child. Sam is amazing, love the way her character is written, described and well she just feels real. Love it. Never have i crushed on a female character but with this book i did.
Do yourself a favour and get to it already. Read it you'll love it.

About the Author
Candace McCoy holds an appointment at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and teaches in the doctoral program of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. In 2009, she was an exchange scholar with Britain's National Police Improvement Agency in Bramshill, England. She has received the American Society of Criminology's Herbert Block Award for distinguished service to the profession.

Helpful Book, but Law Heavy

This is a great book of case studies, and it is very informative. However, the language used is very law heavy, and informational. It is not what I would call a fun read, definitely geared more towards the very dull end of learning.

Excellent book to understand Deaf history!

This book, “Deaf History Unveiled” by John Vickrey Van Cleve is an excellent book for students who are learning about Deaf history. I needed this book for my Deaf History course at school. I figure many students will need this book for a Deaf history class. I like this book because it is a great choice for learning Deaf history because it is a detailed timeline of Deaf history. It discussed the men woman who were large influences on what had developed into Deaf Culture today. The book also discusses the Deaf movement in not only the American culture, but in other cultures such as English, Italian and Russian cultures.
My favorite key feature of this book are the illustrations it contains. I enjoy the illustrations the most because I am a visual person. Reading this book it can be easy to lose some vision in the text, especially if you are a visual person. The illustrations helped me to look at the pictures and out the time period into perspective. This feature of the book appears about every 15 pages throughout this book, which is the perfect amount.
To compare this book with another book that many students who are in Deaf studies courses may have read is the “introduction to American Deaf Culture.” This text is just as great as the “Deaf History Unveiled” text. The main difference between the two are what they discuss. Like I mentioned before the “Deaf History Unveiled” book talked about Deaf history not only from the American culture, but cultures from other countries as well. The “Introduction to American Deaf Culture” only focuses on Deaf culture in America. It is a great book, but for someone who is looking into Deaf studies, they need to know more background information about Deaf culture. Which a large part of influence on Deaf culture and origination of certain aspects of Deaf culture come from other countries. Learning about Deaf culture and the history from other countries beyond just American is a large part of what “Deaf History Unveiled” is about.
I have had a great experiences using this book as not only a text book, but a resource as well. I used this book in other courses to write papers or discussions about Deaf history. It has been a great tool to me beyond my Deaf History course. I would suggest to anyone who is pursing Deaf Studies to purchase this book because it is a very useful tool for understanding the background of Deaf history. It has also been great to me to learn what is really took to make Deaf culture possible. It took a lot of sacrifice and discovery by many individuals to make Deaf culture happen. This book is great in helping people learn and understand that.
