In Yonwood, people are not what they seem. The host of characters include a prophet and her interpreter who the townspeople blindly follow, a girl in the closet, a boy obsessed with snakes, and a hermit who can crack open the sky. Jean DuPrau has created an unusual prequel (Random, 2006) to The City of Ember (2003) and The People of Sparks (2004, both Random). Rather than the pre-apocalyptic climate one would expect, the backwoods setting, the humming bracelet, and the robot vacuum cleaner give the novel a strange anachronistic feeling. Becky Ann Baker's depiction of the native North Carolinian accent is believable, and she voices all the characters perfectly. Sound effects enhance the telling. Listeners new to the series will have no problem following along—this title can stand on its own. The ending drags a bit as DuPrau tries to wrap up all the subplots. Ember fans will be a little disappointed that only the subtleties in the last chapter, What Happened Afterward, point to The City of Ember. Doesn't belong in the series - FILLER!

I have no idea what DuPrau was thinking when she included this book in the series since it is not really a prequel and its story has a flat quality that honestly seemed like an episode of "Three's Company" - you know when there would be some big misunderstanding? That is this book - it is a huge misunderstanding.

Ridiculous is the only word for the tacked on ending that is obviously put there to tie the book into the series.

It would have been a much better book if instead of being 50 years before people even went into the City of Ember it happened right before the cataclysm - perhaps showing us what lead to the destruction and then what it was like for those first people in the City of Ember to adjust to their new life underground.

This story made little sense and just dragged on - I knew all the devices and ended up skimming the pages to make it to the inevitable conclusion. I know these are kids books but any 10 year old would have seen the ending coming from a mile away.

You can completely read the entire series without reading this book though she tries to tie in the final book with this one in a paragraph but it really doesn't mean anything. Aliens? Puhleeze!

I read the first two books of the Ember series to my son, and he loved them, but this book just didn't really come together. The fourth one is not as good as the first two but better than this one.

This book is good but it scared me a little. It doesn't seem like it has a connection to the other books of Ember from the series for most of it but at the end it does and I liked that.

About the Author

Kitty O. Locker was an Associate Professor of English at The Ohio State University, where she taught courses in workplace discourse and research methods. She received her B.A. from DePauw University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana. She also wrote Business and Administrative Communication (6th ed., Irwin/McGraw-Hill, 2003), The Irwin Business Communication Handbook: Writing and Speaking in Business Classes (1993), and co-edited Conducting Research in Business Communication (1988). Her consulting clients included URS Greiner, Abbott Laboratories, the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association, AT&T, and the American Medical Association. In 1994–95, she served as President of the Association for Business Communication (ABC). From 1997 to 2000, she edited ABC’s Journal of Business Communication. She received ABC’s Outstanding Researcher Award in 1992 and ABC’s Meada Gibbs Outstanding Teacher Award in 1998.



Stephen Kyo Kaczmarek is an Assistant Professor at Columbus State Community College. He teaches business and technical communication, composition, creative writing, journalism, public relations, freshman experience, and courses in film and literature he has designed. Steve received an M.A. in English and B.A.s in journalism and English from Ohio State. His consulting clients have included Nationwide Insurance, The Ohio Historical Society, The Ohio Association of Historical Societies and Museums, The Ohio Museums Association, United Energy Systems, etc. Prior to joining Columbus State, Steve managed staff development and information for the Franklin County, Ohio, Commissioners.

Business Communication--Building Critical Skills

Having taught business communications for years, I've been waiting for a textbook that effectively combines business theory with practical approaches for improving students' writing. Using an innovative modular approach, Locker & Kaczmarek's Business Communication-Building Critical Skills (BCS) succeeds in doing both.
What I like most about BCS the flexibility it affords. Its modular approach enabled me to design a curriculum that complemented my teaching style. For instance, each module contains a "Polishing your Prose" section-a series of exercises that review topics ranging from grammar to parallel structure. Throughout the semester, I've used these sections to help students improve their writing noticeably. Other texts tend to relegate discussions about grammar and the craft of writing to single chapter or a less-than-adequate appendix.
In addition to creating an innovative and flexible text, Locker and Kaczmarek have helped to simplify the instructor's job by providing a wealth of supplementary materials, including an online resource, PowerPoint presentations, transparency masters, a test bank, and a computerized gradebook.
Having already used Business Communication-Building Critical Skills, I cannot recommend the text enough. I expect to use it for many semesters to come. I would encourage you to purchase the book (Published by McGraw-Hill) and see for yourself.

Great Book

Few business writing texts balance salient instruction with an easy-to-read writing style. Business Communication: Building Critical Skills does just that. None of the textbooks I've used scored as highly with the students for effectiveness and easy use as this book. As anyone who teaches writing knows, students frequently complain about the textbook regardless of how good it is. Usually those students are the ones that do poorly in the class. But this book satisfied just about everybody including me. The authors manage to cut all the unnecessary information books of this kind usually are crammed with and get to the point. The exercises are great and have real world application, and the many grammar refreshers helped improve my students' writing. It's especially good for non-native speakers of English. This book seems well designed for teachers and students, and I would recommend it to both groups. The book is also cheaper than many competing books, which makes it even more attractive for students on a tight budget, which is most students today.

Well Done
By Little Professor
One of the better business communication texts available. Students find it easier to read than the competitors'. I like the many supplements that come with it. I also like the module approach. I've taught many business communication classes and students almost always complain about the book. Not this one. I wouldn't recommend it if it didn't work. The cost is reasonable and the examples are good. One minor complaint: The web page for the book calls modules "chapters." Not a big deal compared to the many, many things that work in this book.

Working in an IT company catering to bankers I bought this book to help understand their lingo. I have to say it hasn't disappointed yet. It is also very up to date the latest IT/banking terms. If you were to read all the definitions in this book you would probably know more than you banker. A great reference. Buy it!

Clear and Comprehensive

Whether you are a novice seeking to learn the fundamentals of banking, or an active professional who has just encountered an unusual term, you will want this book. Each definition is short (only a paragraph or so), but most contain links to other terms, so the reader can gain a progressively deeper understanding of how terms interrelate. I also like the frequent inclusion of dates (e.g., the year a particular law was passed). The definitions are authoritative--based on a number of leading accounting, banking, and financial entities identified in the introduction. It's worth far more than its bargain price. I look forward to the next edition (Year 2000?). Keep up the good work!

This can almost be considered an inexpensive textbook. It not only defines, but explains the terms in a simple, easy to understand format. Although in dictionary form, it consistently relates the terms to one another so the reader will understand how the concepts interwind. Includes financial and banking terms.

Shelly Tochluk calls us to witness racial practice in the U.S.
Compelling remarkable and invaluable material about racial justice. A call to witnessing from a renewed white identity, building a new white culture, the author asks us, it is possible?

What is put forth here is a proposal to build a new white identity aware and ready to make a stand for racial justice. A new white identity able to take part in the transformation of what a new racial dynamic can bring to the political, social, and economic fabric of the United States of America. It is not only a proposal, but a well documented and compelling analysis supported by historical data and a number of reputable contemporary voices in the forefront of the fight to end racism. Tochluk takes us to witnessing and invites us to look at positive contribution forms of participation and value added inclusion to the social equation from every group, especially white witnessing practices. The author widens the scope uncovering the ways racism is practiced in our 21st century. Through a number of paired interviews she conducted, she takes us through hidden forms of racism and conflict in interpersonal relations, work and educational settings. She uncovers patterns and presents us tools to deal with every situation.

This book not only makes us aware, but calls for action through very specific organizations, a kind of rod map conceptually to make a difference through witnessing practices.

Deep, Honest, and Thoughtful

If the idea of this book even remotely interests you, I think you'll be very satisfied with the experience. There are insights here that will appeal to many different people. And, some things that seem awkward or strange. I saw these as moments when two people discussing such a complicated topic differ in the personal expressions and emotional reactions experienced. It feels honest because of this, and makes it seem OK to share a range of thoughts and reactions with others as well. I'm new to this type of book, and thought it was a great introduction.

About the Author
Alison Cook-Sather is Professor of Education and Coordinator of the Teaching and Learning Initiative at Bryn Mawr College. She works with undergraduate students seeking state certification to teach at the secondary level and college faculty members interested in developing their teaching. A necessary lens for anyone involved in education

Teaching is about so much more than the content students learn in class and demonstrate on a test. Any teacher can attest to that. What we receive in Cook-Sather's Learning from the Student's Perspective is clear and brilliant input from students on a variety of issues central to teaching - from classroom management to creating engaging lessons, assigning homework and grading. Grounded in the concern that "education [is] the only provider of essential social services that does not consult its user population about their needs" (p. 4) this Sourcebook offers compelling student opinion based on their experience alongside strategies for how to elicit and use this input.

This, for me as a teacher and teacher educator, represents a central lens through which to view the difficult and rich work of teaching young people content and skills they need to know in order to be successful, while also supporting their growth and development. Using this book in a teacher education program has enabled me to support student teachers as they learn how to teach with the perspectives of students as a central component of their learning. Grounded in theory and filled with rich examples, practical applications and important content regarding how to teach, Cook-Sather's Learning from the Student Perspective is a powerful book and a necessary read for anyone working with and supporting students.

Outstanding Text from Multiple Perspectives

In the last decade of data-driven, standardized education, classroom affect has gone largely to the attentive back burner, at least in the popular media. For various reasons - and thank goodness! - social and emotional issues, including affective climate and the "whole child" focus, seem to be returning to the forefront of scholastic consciousness. The most effective teachers, of course, never forgot about them and their importance in the first place.

Dr. Alison Cook-Sather is just such a teacher, and this text demonstrates the importance that she has always placed on student-centered, affective classroom practice, highlighting the importance of open, sensitively symbiotic relationships between teachers and students.

This book offers many unique benefits, chief among which in my opinion is its inclusive consideration of various perspectives and narrative voices. Classroom practitioners often respond well to qualitative, anecdotal data, and this text's inclusion of students' insights, in addition to its rich grounding in both theory and published research, serves to offer readers a quite-clear picture of effective, just, and considerate education in our early twenty-first century.

In contrast to so many of the books currently situated on educational syllabi, this one is not a text from the proverbially out-of-touch ivory tower in any sense. In fact, this book is quite the opposite: a view, an explanation, and a directive from the grass roots. Highly recommended... I hope that this text (and more like it) soon appears on many Ed. departments' reading lists, which it deservedly should.

Crucial text for new teachers

Cook-Sather's book is a must-read for any new teacher entering the classroom. Student voice is the new frontier in educating for social justice, and this book does justice to both the movement (of which Cook-Sather is a pioneer) and the students themselves. Every section taught me something new about student experience, and broadened my horizons for how to teach well. It's so easy to forget as an adult (even a 24-year old first time teacher!) what it's like to be a high school student, and to silence our students in the same way that we were silenced. Cook-Sather reminds us that the classes we teach, are, themselves, a text to be studied. This book is a refreshing wake-up call to EMPOWER our students and with them look critically at curriculum and pedagogy.
