The Ultimate Evidence: Rethinking the Evidence Issues for Spirit-baptism, by Larry Vern Newman

Description: It is quite an assertion to claim that one is filled with the Spirit of God. What does a person offer as proof that this is actually true? Pentecostals at the turn of the twentieth century read the Bible, debated the issue, and then proposed an evidence they thought the scriptures indicated was the primary verification of Spirit-baptism. It was determined that the evidence to prove one had been baptized with the Holy Spirit was that the person had spoken in an unknown language as prompted by the Holy Spirit. The primary evidence of Spirit-baptism, it was concluded, was the expression of a charism. It was charismatic. In The Ultimate Evidence, Larry Newman argues that the initial evidence doctrine, as it stands, is inadequate and needs to be revisited and adjusted. Without discrediting or devaluing speaking in tongues, Newman points the reader to the ultimate evidence of Spirit-baptism: the more excellent way. Gathering from historical, cultural, and biblical sources, Dr. Newman argues that the biblical evidential paradigm is ethical and issues forth from the agape of the Cross. It is the ethical dimension of the Christian life that is primary. In 1 Cor 13:1 Paul wrote: ""If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal."" Endorsements: ""This book can be welcomed as another sign of the new spirit of self-criticism among younger Pentecostal scholars. It sharply challenges several traditional assumptions associated with the Pentecostal movement and proposes a new hermeneutic that will lend credibility to the real distinctives of Pentecostalism."" --Donald Bloesch About the Contributor(s): Larry Vern Newman is Professor of Church Growth & Renewal at Columbia Evangelical Seminary. He holds a DMin from Fuller Theo1ogical Seminary. He was ordained by the Assemblies of God in 1966 and has pastored churches in the West and Midwest.

This is by far the best book on the subject of glossolalia it has been my privilege to read. So well researched and documented.

Strong on history but weak on conclusions...
By G. Maxwell
Dr Newman has written a tome which seeks to call into question the Pentecostal teaching of the doctrine of initial evidence. (i.e. Tongues being the initial physical sign that one has been baptized in the Holy Spirit.)

He goes into a lot of the history behind the origin of this belief and how this doctrine developed.

In a nutshell, Newman believes that a believer, when born again, receives all of the Holy Spirit that they are going to receive. Anything further--such as the baptism of the Holy Spirit--is simply an outworking of the already-present Holy Spirit. To put it differently, one activates what they already have and experiences a new dimension. But it is not a separate or subsequent event where the individual gets something that they previously did not have.

Newman believes that tongues are not the only evidence of this baptism. In fact, he holds love to be the determining factor as to whether one has been baptized in the Spirit...or not.

Newman does a great job of showing how historically, the tongues as initial evidence teaching was not shared by all of the leadership of the Pentecostal movement in the early 1900s. Indeed, F.F. Bosworth--author of "Christ the Healer"--broke fellowship with the Assemblies of God over the issue.

The reason that I gave it three stars was for the historical information. But the same old problems of authorial intent surfaced in the book. Newman believes that Luke's intent was NOT to show tongues as evidence; instead, Luke was simply reporting historical information.

However, no matter what Luke's intent was, we know that Luke edited and wrote what he did under the inspiration and direction of the Holy Spirit. And there are several passages in the book of Acts where the Holy Spirit was conferred upon individuals AFTER they had already been born again. To ignore this is to miss the plain facts of what Luke wrote. And if it happened three times, then it is a stretch to say that it was only a transitional period and these are the exceptions, as many claim about Acts. Besides, if every Word is to be confirmed in the mouth of two or three witnesses, the Pentecostals have enough verses to meet the biblical requirements to establish a truth.

In summation: the book is a good source of history regarding the formation of the initial evidence doctrine, but as a polemic against current Pentecostal theology, it sadly lacks a convincing hermeneutic where separability/subsequence and the initial evidence paradigm is concerned.

If you are looking for further "ammunition" against tongues as initial evidence or separability/subsequence, you will have to look elsewhere as the author, in my opinion, did not deal convincingly with those passages which teach otherwise.

At last! A comprehensive book about glossolalia (speaking in tongues)
By Ivan A. Rogers
Here's a book written by Dr. Larry Vern Newman about glossolalia (speaking in tongues); someone who has been-there-and-done-that. I was pleased to discover that his very first words in his very first chapter established his credentials to write about the subject under discussion, as follows: "This writer was baptised with the Holy Spirit at the age of thirteen and spoke in tongues, and I still speak in tongues. It is my desire to affirm here my personal belief in the validity and value of speaking in tongues...Glossolalia, manifested by the Holy Spirit, is a gift of God that must not be denigrated or suppressed."

This is by far the best book on the subject of glossolalia it has been my privilege to read. So well researched and documented. The author has been careful to quote other scholars who approach the subject matter from both the pro and con positions. Balance is essential in theological debate; especially in those issues of controversy (sometimes it seems that almost every biblical issue is controversial).

Dr. Newman is among the most profound with some of his personal statements in this book. For example, "We must not confuse the charisms (gifts) of the Spirit with the person of the Spirit. The church down through the centuries has had the Spirit at work within her, even in the most somber days of the dark ages. The Holy Spirit did not leap over the centuries from the upper room in Jerusalem to Camp Creek, North Carolina, or a Bible school in Topeka, Kansas, leaving everything in between in a vacuum..."

This book, in my opinion, is worthy to be included in the curricula of every Bible college, seminary, and serious study of the Holy Spirit. I gladly give it my highest rating.
