About the Author
Steven Shaw is a teacher of the Alexander Technique and a former competitive swimmer. Over the past 20 years he has developed a revolutionary approach to swimming, the Shaw Method, which has helped thousands of people to find freedom in the water. Since 1999 Steven has been course director of the university-accredited Shaw Method of Swimming Teaching Diploma. Shaw’s method is rapidly spreading throughout the world and is currently taught in over 10 countries.

Swim well with perfection

In my opinion, I rate this book with 5 stars. I have been swimming since childhood and went to a professional swimming school but have never come across a good swimming method like the "Shaw method" Alexander Technique. The book is very well illustrated and explains step by step how the swim without strain in freedom. With a good technique comes great speed without injury. This book has all you need to swim well in safety and perfection. I myself have tried all these methods and techniques and have improved my swimming. I gain more confidence in water taking out benefits from precious time. This book taught me to appreciate swimming in a graceful way with better performance. I let go and went with the flow instead of pushing myself. For example, I learnt to swim butterfly the "Shaw method" believe me I swim the technique with less strain limiting the energy expended on non propulsive movements. Try it yourself, I feel more confidant in water with these methods in all my stroke :-)

I've read this book twice and have been incorporating the techniques into my own workouts ... as well as in my swimming lessons (of young kids). This is a great tool for anyone interested in swimming with purpose ... as well as for enjoyment. Well done! A+++++!

A rational, common sense introduction to transgenic strategies

The author of this book defines a "genetic ceiling" for a variety of crop to be a situation (such as the need for growing the crop in arid environments) where standard breeding is intractable but where genetic engineering can step in to successfully solve the problem at hand (such as the introduction of foreign genes in the crop so as to make it hardy in such environments). Without giving a "cookbook" for how to implement genetic engineering through transgenic strategies, the author's goal is to make readers more aware of the need for biodiversity as it relates to the miniscule number of actual food crops cultivated at the present time: rice, wheat, maize, and soybeans. To depend on so few poses a threat, considering the world's population at the present time and its growth in the near future. But the goal of biodiversity must be cognizant as to the dangers of introducing species to environments in which they are not native, or the inadvertent introduction of `feral' organisms (those domesticated species that have escaped domestication and returned to the wild state). "Gene flow" therefore is an issue that must not be taken lightly, even to those individuals, such as this reviewer, who are die-hard advocates of genetic engineering and transgenic strategies.

Even though the author is not presenting a collection of recipes for repairing the problems brought about by "glass ceilings" the reader can extract a problem-constraint-strategy pattern throughout the book. Examples of this include:

Problem: To use straw for producing meat and fuels.
Constraint: Straw is difficult for ruminants to digest and only about 20% efficiency for conversion to ethanol.
Strategy: Use RNA interference to modify the lignin and cellulose content in order to increase digestibility.

Problem: Papaya is highly susceptible to papaya ringspot virus.
Constraint: Metabolic pathways for inducing disease-fighting phytoalexins are very complex.
Strategy: Transform the VST gene encoding stilbene synthase into papaya.

Many more of these kinds of examples abound in the book, along with in-depth discussion on the risks of ferality and gene flow into existing populations.

Clearly the author is fed up with the irrationality and propaganda of many groups opposed to genetic engineering. His common sense approach to the issues will speak to the choir but will probably not dissuade those who are members of these groups. But sustained information flow from the advocates of genetic engineering, with real evidence from scientific field experiments may persuade the regulatory agencies of the viability and safety of transgenic crops. Still though, it is a disconcerting development that not only must a war be fought against hunger and disease, but also one against hysteria and misinformation.

Jonathan Gressel, Genetic Glass Ceilings

Jonathan Gressel has written a fascinating and thoughtful book about plant breeding. His book is also very timely as the newspapers are filled with stories about a food crisis.

What was most impressive was Gressel's willingness to ask challenging questions. He asks sensible, but provocative, questions, and then discuss possible solutions -- not only in "rosy" terms but with recognition of the difficulties and challenges that exist. At the same time, Gressel evinces a firm conviction that scientific solutions are likely to exist for well-formulated questions of scientific merit. An excellent book that should be read by thoughtful, engaged policy-makers around the world who are concerned about issues of agricultural development.

Let me give two examples:
In Chapter 5, "Introduction to Case Studies: Where the Ceiling needs to be Breached", Gressel asks why dwarfing (the successful approach for wheat and rice of the Green Revolution) has stopped. He asks, "Why not dwarfing, using transgenic techniques, for maize and sorghum?" His question astounded this reader because I had assumed that the Green Revolution had exhausted its possibilities. His question and affiliated discussion clearly indicates that the Green Revolution has not exhausted its possibilities, if scientists and plant breeders ask meritorious questions and seek sensible solutions in scientific plant breeding.
Gressel's Chapter 7, "Kwashiorkor, Diseases, and Cancer: Needed: Food without Mycotoxins", is especially interesting. Gressel provides the science to show that a sensible scientific approach to plant breeding can do so very much for the safety and health of humans (particularly the poor) and animals. His discussion focuses not only on acute problems (such as neural tube defects for babies and various deadly diseases for horses and pigs) but also on chronic problems of long-term exposure to mycotoxins likely increasing the life-time risks of suffering cancers.

About the Author

Jeff Bezemer is Reader in Learning and Communication and Co-Director of the Centre for Multimodal Research at the UCL Institute of Education.

Gunther Kress is Professor of Semiotics and Education at the UCL Institute of Education. He is the author of many books including Multimodality: A Social Semiotic Approach to Contemporary Communication (Routledge, 2010) and Reading Images: The Grammar of Visual Design (co-authored with Theo van Leeuwen, Routledge, 2006).

Of questionable reliability

The author has a prize winning subject. The first four chapters were well written and answered questions I have always had about the pecking order at the Reich Chancellery. For example,What did Julius Schaub actually do in the entourage around Hitler?, Who did one need to know to approach Martin Bormann etc. But when I arrived at chapter five "Was there a Nazi Luxury" I was appalled by a series of egregious errors which made me question the reliability of what went before. For example the author seems to think that Manfred von Brauchitch took time off from being Chief of General Staff at the Bendlerstrasse to drive race cars for Mercedes Benz: irresponsible at a minimum, and that Rudolfo (sic) Carrociola was an "Italian race driver" and that Zeppelin was an auto manufacturer (Maybach produced a luxury model called the Maybach Zeppelin) The publisher should have hired a competent editor.

Excellent for the new compound bow buyer

I read it, then followed it's advice and read it again. I went online looking at compound bows and then to a pro-shop and asked intelligent questions. I have not bought a bow yet due to what i learned. I read it again, then one more time. I was so hot to get a compound to shoot along with my recurve, but I am holding off til a bow shows up that meets the requirements I set because of the book's information. I give it 5 stars because it is so useful in understanding what I am buying.

But, I had to really read some pages carefully, carefully, to be sure I was looking at the correct figure/picture referenced in the text. I finally wrote in the referenced text figure #/picture number at the figures/pictures that were not labeled or labeled badly. On some figures I penciled in an arrow to a location on a picture with a note what it was. That was interesting because the author is said to have written other books. It shouldn't have been that hard to know where to look.

I liked his repeated note that a "fast miss is still a miss". He covered sounds made by bows, but I was surprised he said nothing about the noise factor for the last 5,000 years impeding hunters. Fred Bear killed a lot of animals with his noisy bows. LOL

Not thorough at all

This book has a lot of authoritative opinion, and I'm sure that taking advice from it is sound. For anyone that's considering tuning their own compound bow, this book will certainly help you take the plunge.

However, with how complex a compound bow is, it would really help if there was more illustration. There's simply no good way to explain how the cams are operating, with words alone. The illustrations and photographs are pretty inefficient, especially depending on which bow he's referring to. The single cam setup is afforded no illustration which would show the path of the complete path of the cable and string. There's a one photograph of a black string, on a solid black cam for example, which doesn't really help anyone.

After reading it, I still come away unable to restring a single-cam bow (and this is supposed to be a user-friendly bow for tuning). I feel like I have to go rent/borrow/buy a second bow with the same string style, just so I can replicate it.

This book will certainly give you a little confidence in fiddling with your bow, but unfortunately, won't help you with a bow that's in need of serious tuning. I'm surprised Larry Wise took the time to go into detail on how to make a string, but avoided going into any detail on actually stringing the bow in question. I feel that knowing how to string your bow would be essential and come before making the string itself. It would at least be nice to know what to do with the string after you make it.

On top of all of this, the book really lacks any treasure trove of knowledge that can't be gained through a brief search through your favorite search engine. I was hoping I might find some useful information which the internet seems to lack, alas, that is not the case.

Extremely Technical Language

Reading this book is like talking to a Doctor or having to learn a new language ---- and I'm no dummy. I'm a college graduate, locksmith, Technical writer, 38 years as an operator, Supervisor, Safety Engineer in the Oil Industry, a Paralegal, and have graduated from Private Investigator training. I will come back to this booklet later, but have ordered more basic archery reading to go over first. "Tuning your Compound Bow" is written as if everyone in the world knows exactly what he is talking about. I dislike very much when people don't use language that the beginners would understand. I'm 67 years old, retired, and just want to get back into target shooting archery.
