The World of the Salons: Sociability and Worldliness in Eighteenth-Century Paris, by Antoine Lilti

The world of the eighteenth-century salon has long been lauded as a meritocratic setting where writers, philosophers, and women created the Enlightenment. In The World of the Salons, historian Antoine Lilti proposes a fresh interpretation of salons in eighteenth-century Paris. Drawing on cultural history, social history, and the history of literature, he challenges the commonly accepted vision of salons as literary circles that were part of the Republic of Letters.

Lilti argues, instead, that salons were institutions of worldly sociability that helped shape "the world" (le monde) and high society. They were essential places where the aristocratic elites of the capital met and interacted with literary figures. Attending them required a mastery of the codes of polite conversation. There news circulated and personal reputations were made and lost. As opposed to the salon being a realm separate from the court at Versailles, it was a site where elites gained enough influence to forge marital alliances, secure government appointments or pensions, and win over royal censors. These discussion circles were part of refined society, not public opinion, and those writers who gained mass appeal were shunned by salon-goers.

For those who think they know what the salon meant in early modern European culture, politics, and intellectual circles, Antoine Lilti's The World of the Salons offers an important corrective of what went on behind the closed doors of the French salons.

Review

"Antoine Lilti's book is a masterpiece. Grounded in exhaustive social historical research, it offers the most complete picture ever produced of 'salon society' in eighteenth-century France, dispelling countless myths and revealing the social background against which so much of the Enlightenment took shape. At the same time, its trenchant and original approach, grounded in cutting-edge social and cultural theory, makes it essential reading for anyone interested in what Robert Darnton famously described as the 'social history of ideas.'"-David A. Bell, Princeton University

"A rich and multi-faceted account of an essential eighteenth-century social and cultural context. If we know it today as the 'salon,' it was only named as such after the fact. What is more, Lilti argues, this world never did quite conform to the standard notions that we have inherited of it, whether via Rousseau esque aversion to aristocratic culture or post Revolutionary nostalgia for polite society."- Geoffrey Turnovsky, Eighteenth-Century Studies

"The picture Lilti paints of the eighteenth-century salon stands in stark contrast to the one drawn by those who have tried to write its history in the light of Habermas's theory of the bourgeois public sphere. A number of the broader claims made by this dense and rewarding book, however, suggest that salons matter more than we have previously thought. Not only has Lilti reaffirmed that the subject will remain a vital element in a number of on going historical debates--concerning the roles of writers, the dimensions of the public sphere, the formation of public opinion, and the nature of Old Regime politics--but he has opened up new lines of inquiry by exploring such themes as the construction of social identities, the links between mondanit and literature, and the constitution of national stereotypes."--Steven D. Kale, H-France

"Le monde des salons offers a fresh and innovative perspective on the salons of eighteenth-century Paris. Antoine Lilti is an important new voice in the history of early modern France, and his stimulating book is sure to make a splash in the historiography of old regime cultural practices. Lilti writes with the grace and confidence of a seasoned professional, and Le monde des salons is certainly the new 'must read' on the history of the pre-Revolutionary French salon."-Jeremy Caradonna, Department of History, University of Alberta

"Antoine Lilti's Le Monde des salons is the most thorough and important study of eighteenth-century French salons to date. Methodologically sophisticated, it distinguishes between how contemporaries talked about salons and what actually took place in them. In doing so, it explodes several myths. First, it puts the lie to recent interpretations that have depicted salons as crucibles of modern egalitarianism - places where social hierarchy gave way to polite, enlightened conversation among equals. Second, Lilti shatters the image of salons as literary founts of enlightenment. Third, Lilti challenges the Tocquevillian notion that salons were sites for the elaboration of abstract literary politics and oppositional public opinion. Far from providing nave, disempowered philosophes a place to concoct seditious ideologies, salons were where savvy socialites bolstered their social, cultural, and political capital."-Charles Walton, University of Warwick

He is the author of Figures publiques : l'invention de la clbrit (1750-1850) and co-editor of Penser l'Europe au XVIIIe sicle: commerce, civilisation, empire.

Just the very basics and good to help learn How to think in 5 elements, but errors in given info/relations.
By TIMMEH!!!
This book just presents 5 elements and relationships and is good for someone like Mom or Grandma or youngsters who have zero concept of 5 elements. Or even the typical "(western) feng shui enthusiast" who thinks it has anything to do with decorating and organizing and such nonsense. It is very easy reading and understanding. It is definitely not a reference and not worthy of an adult teaching curriculum. This book is just helping to show people how to think in 5 elemental relationships, and is pretty long considering that is all that it is doing. I read this book a few months ago while visiting the US, but I recall many times reading statements that went against fundamentals learned in hong kong, taiwan, and japan (dont trust anything in mainland china after Yale-man Mao's proxy communist reprogram/ westernization, remember all tradition was best preserved by USA's KMT in Taiwan), and definitely dont trust the specific examples and relations given in the book. Just use it as beginner to learn relationships and how to think about it.

A Good Place to Start
By Gary Sandstrom
I practice and teach qigong, and have read a dozen or so of the books recommended by my teachers, and I recommend "Wood Becomes Water" to my students as a first read on the subject of Traditional Chinese Medicine. TCM can quickly become complicated, but this book keeps things simple and clear and still gives a feel for the breadth and depth of the subject.

A real motivator
By James W. Owens
I just finished this book and I must say it has truly motivated me to make changes, some small but many LARGE! Gail has successfully tied together seemingly unrelated areas of life that actually co-exist and concisely described how they affect each other. This knowledge has already prompted me to modify how I approach my business, projects, home, family and yes, self.
I highly recommend this book for anyone, especially those desiring to make purposeful and constructive changes in their lives.

I have used these for years, until mine were accidentally ruined. This is my second time buying them. I have just learned they are out of print, so if you want them, get them while you can.

Good, Solid, Intuitive Deck
By E. Taylor
If you're thinking about getting this deck just do it! The descriptions are solid and practical without the usual over abundance of New Age Mumbo Jumbo. It is seldom that I come across a deck that I can just pick up and read fresh from the box. This is a good basic crystal energy oracle that is both easy to use for the newcomer and a joy to read for the advanced practicioner.

SolVed many alignment problems
By Richard
Dance is my hobby and I am not in medicine, yet this book is still understandable. The book has the feel of something written for physical/occupational therapists to get new imagery from. My own use of this book is providing breakthroughs for me and solving some nagging alignment problems that experienced instructors could not really fix. My appearance, stamina, and comfort in dance and life have improved in the two months I have owned ths book.

Amazing body information
By howgal
Many years ago I got my BFA in Modern Dance. If only we had this as our book for the year long class in kinesiology! There is such depth of understanding of how we move and how to connect the mind and the body to go WAY beyond what you thought was possible. I wonder if this had been my introduction to kinesiology way back when - perhaps I would still be dancing today. I find it invaluable to teaching Pilates and Yoga today.

When you get it, you have to sit with some paragraphs and let it sink in. Then read it many more times to see how it is interwoven. No superfulous words, no junk thrown in. It all is purposeful. Beautifully done.

Dynamic is definately the first word for this text!
By Turyia
My practice is with pregnant women (actually women's health because when the woman is healthy so is her family) and this book has given me so much to making my practice even better than it is already. It's incredible and I do love it. I'm sure you will also. Physical Therapists should have this book and have read it from cover to cover. The information in it is fantastic! I just wish I could have the entire book downloaded into my brain!!!!!! You will not regret purchasing this book. Actually I'd rate it a 10!

Coercion and Its Fallout (Revised Edition), by Murray Sidman

Do you use Coercion? No? When you have finished this book, you are going to be very surprised; you are going to know some things about yourself that you never knew before. We use coercion almost exclusively to control each other; many find it hard to imagine any other way. The author asks, Does the death penalty deter potential murderers? Is harsh retaliation the answer to the discipline problem in our schools? Do the standard coercive practices work? - in law enforcement, behavior therapy, education, the family, business, the armed forces, diplomacy. Behavior analysis has shown that they do not work. Coercion is in the long run self-defeating. Punishment eventually proves counterproductive. Sidman presents a rational discussion of matters in which emotions usually run strong. He proposes that what we have learned in the laboratory can provide guides both for personal conduct and public policy

Life-changing book delivers a new understanding of behavior
By Andrea Robinson
This phenomenal book was life-changing, compelling, fascinating and educational. It is vital for individuals and communities alike to understand that force breeds repercussions. You might get what you want in the short term, but the fallout is considerable and not to be dismissed. The first half of book is absolutely invaluable.

Sidman also offers suggestions for implementation in the second half, but I thought Karen Pryor did a better job (at least on a personal level) in Don't Shoot the Dog, offering various other methods besides coercion for your friends, family, acquaintances, and co-workers.

Together, the two books deliver a good underpinning of understanding and terrific suggestions for influencing without coercing. :)

Reinforcement is everything.
By Bobby Gordon
Interesting book. Sets a good example for where the world should be headed and how behavior analysis fits in. A good book for anyone in the field as it raises many appropriate concerns about how we manage behaviors both at work and with each other. Definitely changed my view and how I work.

The Prince and the Pauper is a novel by American author Mark Twain. It was first published in 1881 in Canada, before its 1882 publication in the United States. The novel represents Twain's first attempt at historical fiction. Set in 1547, it tells the story of two young boys who are identical in appearance: Tom Canty, a pauper who lives with his abusive father in Offal Court off Pudding Lane in London, and Prince Edward, son of King Henry VIII.
Tom Canty, youngest son of a poor family living with the drags of society in Offal Court, has always aspired to a better life, encouraged by the local priest (who has taught him to read and write). Loitering around the palace gates one day, he sees a prince (the Prince of Wales – Edward VI). Coming too close in his intense excitement, Tom is nearly caught and beaten by the Royal Guards; however, Edward stops them and invites Tom into his palace chamber. There the two boys get to know one another, fascinated by each other's life and their uncanny resemblance; they were born on the same day. They decide to switch clothes "temporarily". The Prince momentarily goes outside, quickly hiding an article of national importance (which the reader later learns is the Great Seal of England), but dressed as he is in Tom's rags, he is not recognised by the guards, who drive him from the palace, and he eventually finds his way through the streets to the home of the Canty's. There he is subjected to the brutality of Tom's abusive father, who he manages to escape from, and meets one Miles Hendon, a soldier and nobleman returning from war. Although Miles does not believe Edward's claims to royalty, he humours him and becomes his protector. Meanwhile, news reaches them that King Henry VIII has died and Edward is now the king..

Tom, posing as the prince, tries to cope with court customs and manners. His fellow nobles and palace staff think "the prince" has an illness which has caused memory loss and fear he will go mad. They repeatedly ask him about the missing "Great Seal", but he knows nothing about it; however, when Tom is asked to sit in on judgments, his common-sense observations reassure them his mind is sound.

As Edward experiences the brutish life of a pauper firsthand, he becomes aware of the stark class inequality in England. In particular, he sees the harsh, punitive nature of the English judicial system where people are burned at the stake, pilloried, and flogged. He realizes that the accused are convicted on flimsy evidence (and branded – or hanged – for petty offenses), and vows to reign with mercy when he regains his rightful place. When Edward unwisely declares to a gang of thieves that he is the king and will put an end to unjust laws, they assume he is insane and hold a mock coronation.

After a series of adventures (including a stint in prison), Edward interrupts the coronation as Tom is about to celebrate it as King Edward VI. Tom is eager to give up the throne; however, the nobles refuse to believe that the beggarly child Edward appears to be is the rightful king until he produces the Great Seal that he hid before leaving the palace. Tom declares that if anyone had bothered to describe the seal he could have produced it at once, since he had found it inside a decorative suit of armor (where Edward had hidden it) and had been using it to crack nuts.

Edward and Tom switch back to their original places and Miles is rewarded with the rank of earl and the family right to sit in the presence of the king. In gratitude for supporting the new king's claim to the throne, Edward names Tom the "king's ward" (a privileged position he holds for the rest of his life).

With his legendary humor and delightful wit, Reiner gives new life to this classic Twain tale. The multiple Emmy Award winner and recent Television Hall of Fame inductee beautifully shifts between several accents, dialects and moods, letting listeners commiserate with the author's young protagonist, Tom Canty. Raised in a raucous family of beggars and thieves, Tom dreams and reads of princely life to escape his miserable 16th-century London existence. After wandering to Westminster and meeting benevolent Prince Edward Tudor (who bears an uncanny resemblance to the ragamuffin Tom), the pair exchange clothes and unwittingly identities. Reiner's vocal performance of this heartwarming story is sure to keep the entire family entranced. Listeners will be pleased that this volume is only one of several in a Mark Twain series read by Reiner.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6?Carl Reiner narrates this abridged version of The Prince and the Pauper. It captures the main plot points of the book and retains the rollicking humor of Twain's writing. The story concerns Tom Canty, a poor boy, who bears a striking resemblance to Prince Edward, heir to the throne of England. Through a series of mishaps, the boys change places, and those around them do not believe them when they each claim to be the other boy. Eventually, all ends well, with Edward restored to the throne and Tom retaining a place in his court. Reiner's narration is, at first, a big jarring, since an American accent telling a very British story is unexpected. However, once the story develops, listeners will quickly become engrossed. Various sound effects, such as trumpet fanfares, give the story some color. Overall, this is an entertaining choice for most public libraries.

From Library Journal
Grade 1-3-Condensing a 400-page novel into a picture book is a monumental task. The Prince and the Pauper is a long moralistic tale with difficult dialogue written in the archaic pattern of the 16th century. It is also a rollicking adventure of drama and narrow escapes. Though more understated than many of Mark Twain's novels, it is also filled with his sly wit and humor. Mayer does manage to convey the basics of the story in readable prose but the nuances of the novel are necessarily lost. For example, the name of Tom's home, Offal Court, which does as much as any description to place the boy's station in life, is not mentioned. Also, some vital connections are not made. The hiding of the Great Seal and Tom's accidental knowledge of its location, which is the key to Edward's eventual recognition as king, is not delineated. The build up of humor in such events as the first royal dinner, where after a series of mistakes and gaffs, Tom is afraid to scratch his violently itching nose, can not be contained in the shortened version. The illustrations, done in realistic watercolors, though often relying too heavily on gaping mouths to portray emotion, pick up the dramatic moments of the story. Ultimately, though, even a skillful picture-book retelling can be no more than a brief summary of the original, and not a substitute for it.

A wonderful classic for intelligent and imaginative kids.
By Margaret Fiore
This story has been a favorite of mine since I first read it as a child. I have re-read it many, many times, most recently to two of my children (who also enjoyed it), and it continues to be rich and engaging. Since the language is true to the era of the story, however, it may put some readers off. Others will find that the archaic language enhances the tale.
A beggar (Tom Canty) and a prince (Edward Tudor), who look so alike as to be twins, meet and swap clothes for a lark. But an accident of judgment stretches the lark into an adventure, and the adventure into a nightmarish struggle of life and death, honor and dishonor.
Hasn't everyone wished to be royalty at some point in their lives? And especially if you were the poorest of the poor, like Tom Canty, wouldn't it be your dearest wish as a child? This is a great and yet fearful adventure, superbly detailed and believable. It was carefully written in such a manner that genuine history leaves it possible. One of Twain's best ever.

Good story told well
By Buckeyedobe
This is our second Weiss recording. I prefer it to the Three Musketeers because (1) his voices are amazing (he acts them out much more in this story than in the other), (2) I like this story better, and (3) Weiss is much smoother in telling this story than he was in the other. I noticed a few places in the other where his wording seemed awkward or where he seemed to hesitate or stumble over the words. This one, on the other hand, was FLUID and beautifully done. Very highly recommended.

Perfect Stepping Stone to Chapter Books
By Houston Book Lover
My daughter is in 1st grade and started reading during the summer before kindergarten (so she has been reading for about 1 1/2 years). However, she has had difficulty making the transition from easy readers to chapter books. Many picture books seem too easy. Yet most of the chapter books intimidate her with the pages of words without pictures. The Level 2 Usborne Readers perfectly fill this gap. The books contain familiar, even classic, tales in a chapter book format. The books challenge young readers in that they are about 60 pages in length ("The Prince and the Pauper" is 63 pages). However, EVERY page contains a colorful image! This is a departure from most chapter books -- and one that keeps my daughter engaged. Also, all of the hardback Usborne Level 2 and 3 readers that I've ordered have come with an integrated ribbon bookmark. That is very convenient. The colors are bright. Their size makes them easy to hold and carry. Try them. You will love them for your child!

The Answer to the Atheist's Handbook, by Richard Wurmbrand

Rev. Wurmbrand languished for fourteen years in Communist prisons. Though beaten and starved, he never broke. Having passed through hell on earth, this courageous Romanian pastor emerged with a burning love for God and his fellow man.

In this remarkable book, conceived while he was in solitary confinement, Wurmbrand demolishes the arguments for atheism as presented by the Soviet Academy of Science in its Atheist's Handbook.

Throughout the Communist world, people who wanted to get ahead had to master The Atheist's Handbook. Its teachings were drilled into children at school. But Wurmbrand demonstrates that the atheist creed leaves more questions unanswered than it professes to settle. On the positive side, he marshals the testimony of artists, musicians, writers, philosophers, scientists, statesmen, and saints--all of whom bear eloquent witness to the reality of God.

With the sparkling sense of humor that helped sustain him through unspeakable sufferings, Wurmbrand tells the story of God's love for us in language anyone can understand. Is there a God? Does He care about man? Can we trust what the Scriptures tell us about Him? Yes, says Rev. Richard Wurmbrand, in a ringing affirmation of faith that comes from the heart--and from the head.

Got 90 Days? Then You Can Be a Novelist

Many famous authors write their novels in a matter of weeks. William Faulkner wrote As I Lay Dying in six weeks. Joyce Carol Oates often cranks out two or three books a year. Stephen King believes first drafts should take no more than three months to complete. So, what's the trick? Novel writing isn't about inspiration. It's about the time, energy, and discipline to see the project to its finish.

With The 90-Day Novel at your side, now is the time. This inspiring guide will be your push, your deadline, and your spark to finally, without excuses, and in three short months, nail that first draft of your novel.

The difference between wanna-be writers and real writers is the difference between talk and work. If you commit to the schedule and the techniques within The 90-Day Novel and invest two to three hours a day for twelve weeks, you will complete your book. An outline will appear. Characters will take shape. A plot will emerge. Scenes will come together and form a story worth reading. And then the talking can begin!

This helpful guide provides:

  • Instruction that distills the elements of the novel—from crafting your outline to developing intriguing characters and believable plots
  • Strategies for gaining support from your family and friends
  • Motivating insights about writing and writers to minimize your inevitable moments of doubt
  • A schedule to keep you in the writing zone and keep you focused, creative, and working
Whether you're writing your first novel or your third, this guide provides the coaching, the planning, and the writerly commiseration to help get your book written.

Basic primer for 1st-time novelists
By Amazon Customer
This book is really a primer workbook for someone who's never attempted a novel before and wants to - in 90 days - learn about writing them.

The first several exercises have you doing basic internal explorations by writing descriptions of people you know and memories you've had. Another has you create 10 characters, which may (or may not) have a place in your novel. Make a list of 20 opening lines. Depending on where you are with your novel, these activities may or may not have value.

After the brainstorming, you'll create an outline. If your process doesn't play well with outlines, her advice is "Get over it." Later, much of the book has you write a scene one way, analyze it, and then in many "lessons," rewrite it another way.

As a teaching tool, that probably works. For me, though, when writing for publication, this kind of analysis and revision come too soon in the writing process. It takes too much time from the act of just getting everything down first, so I can see how all my scenes work together, versus crafting some of them individually this way.

If you're looking for a prescriptive process that's less instructive on basics, I'd recommend James V. Smith's "You Can Write a Novel" or Robert Ray's "The Weekend Novelist" (1st edition), or even "A Book in a Month" by Victoria Lynn Schmidt.

On a side note, the author has quite a lot of experience as a literary short story writer and editor, but I couldn't find any published novels. At the risk of sounding unfair, I tend to prefer instruction from writers who do have the added experience of publishing a finished novel. To me it brings an "I've been there" nuance to their advice that I find inspiring.

In the end, though, whether this book succeeds for you or not depends very much on the kind of writer you are. It just wasn't for me.

Foundational novel writing tips (by someone who's never written a novel)
By George E.
I would imagine that most everybody at one point or another fantasizes about writing a book. A quick search on Amazon turns up a myriad of self-help books aimed at satiating this urge: Books with titles such as “The 90-Day Novel,” “Book in a Month: The Fool-Proof System for Writing a Novel in 30 Days,” “Your Novel, Day by Day,” “Your First Novel,” and “90 Days to Your Novel.”

Apparently we not only want to write a book, but we also want to write it fast.

But do any of these primers actually work? Can we all become novelists because we read a book about writing a novel?

I decided to find out. I’ll admit, I had an ulterior motive. That’s right, I wanted to write a novel. After doing a fair bit of research, and reading the feedback that users were leaving for each title, I settled on Sarah Domet’s “90 Days to Your Novel.” This book purports to assist the first-time would-be novelist to complete a working first draft in a mere three months. Does this seem like a tall order? Yes, and Ms Domet makes no excuses for her up-front promise that you can expect to spend two or more hours per day writing in order to meet that goal. In fairness, there were some days, especially in the beginning, that I did not spend nearly this long.

First, a little background on the author. While she has published many short stories and nonfiction pieces in a variety of journals, as far as I can tell, she has never actually published a novel. Her blog site appears to not have been updated since March 2011. This is questionable. You may be asking yourself at this point if she has any information worth sharing with the would-be novelist.

The answer is: kind of, sort of.

The strength of this book, I would argue, is the tangible and structured way that Ms Domet goes about the process of having her reader organize his project. The book is broken up into sections in which you are always aware of where you are in your journey. For the first 21 days, you have daily assignments to complete, from coming up with character bios, to brainstorming plot ideas, to writing sample scenes to help you come up with ideas. The author is a huge fan of beginning with an outline for your novel, and throughout these first 21 days, you are constructing this outline and refining it.

Starting with Week 4, (Day 22), you no longer have daily assignments. Now you switch to weekly assignments. Each week will contain between three and four assignments in which you continue tweaking your outline but also start writing the content. The premise of the book is that by the end Week 13, you have a solid first draft.

Now, let me clarify that the title of the book is a bit misleading. This is, after all, a first draft you are holding at this point, not a finished novel. You now have to begin the painstaking process of revising your work, cutting things that don’t work, adding things that are missing, polishing for flow, etc. Many accomplished writers will tell you that the revision process can be gut-wrenching and tedious. But this is what you must do in order to take that first draft and turn it into a polished novel.

So the question remains: Is Sarah Domet’s technique effective?

I can only offer my own experience on the matter. For a while, I thought I was really on to something as I completed assignments and churned out pages and pages of scenes that I thought for sure would end up in my finished novel.

Unfortunately, that is not what happened.

I will give Ms Domet credit as a published author who knows a thing or two about the writing process itself. But had I realized up front that she had never actually published a novel, I would have looked somewhere else.

My biggest complaint is that Ms Domet focuses way too much on issues that are external to the story itself; One example of this is what she calls “scene balance”. She seems to think that the author needs to carefully balance the number of external and internal scenes in the novel so that they are about equal. She defines an external scene as any scene where there is action going on, where a character is physically interacting with the world around him. An internal scene, then, by contrast, is a scene in which most of what is going on is happening in the character’s head. The character may be thinking, reflecting, having an internal monologue, etc.

I would say that we should let the story dictate the scenes that need to be included. Ms Domet wants her reader to use his outline and figure out how many external scenes and how many internal scenes are on it, and cut/revise to balance it out, long before her reader has even started writing the story. There is an old saying that goes something like “if you need to force it to make it fit, you’re probably doing it wrong.”

This has never been so true as it is here.

Another major shortcoming of this book comes when you begin working on Act II of your first draft. For those of you who do not know, Act II is the middle act of the familiar three act structure commonly used in storytelling. It is where most of your action takes place, and typically accounts for at least fifty percent of the word count of your book. At this point, Ms Domet asks you to do something that I find odd: She has you look at your outline, sort the scenes according to scene type, and then write all the scenes for that type before moving on to the next type.

In other words, she wants you to write all of your action scenes together. She wants you to write all of your dialogue scenes together. She wants you to write all of your introspective scenes together. Etcetera. Etcetera.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Filmmakers do this all the time. If you are making a movie, and every day you spend filming adds to your production costs, and you have three scenes that all take place at the same location, you film those three scenes all in a row. You let the editor put the scenes in order later, during postproduction. I know a thing or two about this process, as I have two film festival awards at home.

But in novel writing, this just seems silly. There is no compelling reason that I can think of to write your novel out of order, other than maybe you got into the zone for action scenes and so you just kept writing action scenes.

But what is the trade-off?

For starters, you lose the flow of your narrative. The novelist needs to be able to feel how his work is progressing, if the pace is too slow and needs to be sped up, or if the pace is too fast and needs to be slowed down. Often, a high-octane, edge-of-your-seat action scene needs to be followed by a slower scene, to allow the reader to catch his breath. Too many slow scenes in a row can make the book get stale. Too many fast scenes can detract from the substance of the story. But how are you supposed to get a feel for the flow of your work if you are writing the scenes out of order?

And what about continuity? In novels, scenes build on the scenes that come before. A later scene is influenced by an earlier scene. Something that has already happened will be brought up again later in the book. There is a natural flow to it. How can you have that if you wrote all the scenes out of order? You could argue that you can add these little nuances in later, but that sounds like extra work. I would just as soon get it right the first time through, and save my revision time for fixing bad writing rather than correcting continuity errors that were introduced by writing my scenes out of order.

I will admit that this is the point in the book in which I became very suspicious of what I had gotten myself into.

Of course, these are just my experiences. Someone else may feel that they benefitted from writing their novel following this schedule.

Let me just say I decided to stop following Ms Domet’s book. I finished reading it for any little insights she might have had for me. For instance, she offers lots of great coaching and solid tips on crafting plot and characters, things that she obviously knows about from her publishing experience. But I stopped using her book as a guideline for writing my novel.

In fact, I threw out almost everything I did when following this book, and started more or less from scratch. My completed urban fantasy novel, titled "Line of Sight: A Jake Presnall Novel" bears little resemblance to what I was working on when I was reading “90 Days to Your Novel.”

And so, my advice to the aspiring novelist out there, is put the story first. The story must come before all else. It must come before artificially and externally imposed restrictions like balancing out external and internal scenes. If you want to read any self-help books on writing, there are great ones out there. But focus on reading the books that walk you through the process of improving the actual substance of your writing. Check out Othello Bach’s “How to Write a Great Story: A Fiction Writer’s Handbook.” Or check out James Scott Bell’s “Plot & Structure: Techniques And Exercises For Crafting A Plot That Grips Readers From Start To Finish.” Another favorite of mine is “Writing the Breakout Novel” by Donald Maass.

The difference between these books and the book that I have just critiqued is simple. Rather than walking you through the novel writing process, they simply attempt to explain to you how to write a story that your reader will love to read. “How to Write a Great Story” gives excellent advice on improving the actual content of your writing, maturing you as a writer. “Plot & Structure” is a fascinating look at why some plots seem to work better than others, and gives practical and insightful tips on how to come up with your own plot ideas. “Writing the Breakout Novel” is written by a literary agent who wants you to know what other literary agents are looking for when they are trying to decide if your novel has the potential to become a “breakout novel.”

Thank you for reading. And good luck to you.

Excellent left-brain strategies to activate the right brain!
By Kelcey Parker
I love how this book provides the schedule and structure for writing a novel, thus freeing you up to activate your right brain and immerse yourself in your characters, scenes, and themes. But there's way more here than a stream of smart and timely assignments to keep you on track. Domet breaks down each assignment with examples from novels like The Great Gatsby, Lolita, My Antonia, Nobody's Fool, To Kill a Mockingbird, Housekeeping, and The Handmaid's Tale - and peppers each section with quotes from writers like Mark Twain, Joyce Carol Oates, and Dickens. AND there are excellent mini-lessons on key aspects of craft as well as keen reflections on the psychological demands of committing to 90 days of writing. I teach creative writing at the college level and am considering using this book in an upcoming semester, which, conveniently, lasts about 90 days.

90 Days to Your Novel is a truly comprehensive guide that takes you on an intense writing journey, offering encouragement, tough love, and great tips along the way.
