Simply Enchanting Book
By Cara Ross
I am super excited to be reviewing The Heart of a Scoundrel or as I like to call it Rutland’s Book! That’s right, Rutland finally meets his match!
Edmund; Marquess of Rutland is hell bent on revenge! Ever since a failed duel several years ago, Rutland has planned to destroy everyone he feels has crossed him. Now he has set his sights on the niece of the women that he entered the duel for…and the women that disregarded him, so he plans on getting close to the niece through her pretty friend. He owns her father, so why not use the chit! But he wasn’t expecting Miss Phoebe Barrett and the effect that she would have upon him.
Phoebe Barrett lives in constant shame! Shame of her father brings upon them, he is a disgusting man who doesn’t care for any of them, but gambles away their fortune and betrayals her mother with women of the night. But despite all this, Phoebe see the good in everyone (except her father), so when Rutland shows an interest in her; she looks for the good in him and allows herself to fall in love with him. But then Phoebe finds out the real reason Rutland is interested in her and she is absolutely devastated and wants nothing more to do with him, but Rutland blackmails her into staying with him.
Now Rutland has a wife, but the light within her has vanished; he doesn’t understand why he cares so much, but it all becomes clear when an enemy attacks Phoebe…but is it too late!
This truly is THE BEST Christi Caldwell book to date! This is the bad guy with a heart book and you honestly cannot stop yourself from caring for Rutland! Even though I truly think all of the characters in this book are amazing! The one who stands out the most is Andrew! Oh my goodness I crack up at his antics!
The book was beautifully written and without a plot hole to be found! The characters jump off the page at you and at times, the story simply blew my mind! By the end of the book, I was truly saddened to see these characters go.
I give this book 10 out of 10. It is a simply enchanting book; that proves everyone can find change in their heart.

Five Stars is Not Enough!
By Dee Foster
Edmund, the Marquess of Rutland, has no use for that awful emotion – love. After all, he learned at the hands of his parents that it doesn’t exist. And if they didn’t prove it to him then the fickle female he now suffers daily leg pain from proved it to him. Over the past twenty plus years he has taken his hatred to new levels. Effectively ruining lives of men who owe him money or who have, in his mind, slighted him in some way. Now his sight is set on that fickle female & the perfect way to destroy her – ruin & marry her beloved niece. Learning that the daughter of one of the men who owes him is best friends with his prey he orders this man to report to him their whereabouts so he may set his plan in motion. Alas, the prey is proving harder to bait than he expected.
Phoebe Barrett knows what it is to live in the shadow of shame. After all, her father is a gambler & womanizer and the entire ton knows it. This is a shame that will likely see her as a spinster since the only “gentlemen” who approach her have anything but marriage on their minds. Through a case of mistaken identity (thanks to a shawl) Phoebe meets the ruthless Marquess of Rutland. That meeting and short conversation that sets in motion plans Phoebe never fathomed. Many chance meetings show Phoebe the man that no one else sees and has her falling in love.
The lady he thought he was following proves to be none other than her best friend, Phoebe Barrett. Alas, this meeting shows that trapping his prey is going to be harder than he thought but gives him another plan. Using Phoebe may prove to his advantage in luring his prey in, no matter that Phoebe may be hurt in the process. But the best laid plans can go awry.
Edmund sinks to unbelievable lows in this darker than normal tale by Christi Caldwell. Lows that written by anyone else he may not be able to recover from. However, the VERY TALENTED Ms. Caldwell shows the many dimensions of this scoundrel and elicits hope that he can change – all while making you want to pummel him yourself.
Oh, but don’t think that Phoebe is a weak hearted miss! She’s stronger than you think, even though there are times you want to shake her & make her see what is really going on. Even though she should break under the circumstances she proudly holds her head up and gets on with her life.
I have loved Christi Caldwell since the first novel I read & this story of hope, change and love have made me fall in love with her all over again. My only beef – there are a few loose ends and Edmund has much to atone for. HOWEVER, knowing Ms. Caldwell we have more delicious stories tying these loose ends up & making Edmund squirm a little more.

Captivating.
By Karwyn
"Scoundrels, rakes and rogues are not to be trusted."

But, they are such a pleasure to read about. In Christi Caldwell's latest book The Heart of a Scoundrel, Edmund Deering, the Marquee of Rutland, is a black hearted scoundrel who has been on the periphery in the previous The Heart of a Duke series. He has been villain and a romantic foil in the previous series of books. But now, Edmund gets his own book.

Honestly, I could not fathom how Caldwell was going to make me love him as a hero, in light of the past she had written for him. I did not want Edmund, a dark and dangerous blackguard, becoming a milk sop, love sick, ninny. Edmund true to form does everything he can to seek revenge on those who have spurned him, or might spurn him in the future. He is a character who never wants to be at the mercy of another, and he has lived his life as one needs to, ahead in the game of life at all costs. Then he meets the fiery and happy Miss Phoebe Barrett. The daughter of one of the many who owe him a debt or a favor. Edmund is all about keeping account and making sure he is the one with the most power. What Phoebe thinks is a chance meeting is actually a move in a long game of revenge that Edmund happens to be playing. The major difference is that Edmund is playing a game and Phoebe is unknowingly a pawn in this game. Or is she?

“Panic pounded in his chest as he, who prided himself of his mastery over self-control, had succumbed to his hungering for the breathless, wide-eyed innocent before him.”

Edmund is caught in his own trap, and ensnared by Phoebe. He doesn’t even know he is caught until it is far too late, and true to his character he lashes out at the one person who loves him. He feels caged, and doesn’t actually know how to live any other life than the one filled with games and revenge.

The book Caldwell has written is the best of her combined work. She delves deeply into Edmund’s character and gives the reader a stark bright light into the darkness that formed Edmund from a very young age. Edmund is a product of his environment, and a pawn of his vengeful parents. He was twisted and formed by their own hate to the extent that Edmund is a emotionally stunted adolescent in the body of a thirty two year old man.

In sharp contrast is the woman he adores, Miss Phoebe Barrett, who despite his father being a leech, drunkard and gambler, is a open, happy and bright young woman. She is not a cynic, as she has a bright light that shines from her, drawing Edmund like a moth to the flame.

“Then one such as she would never be needing forgiveness. No, she was the light to his dark. The innocence to his evil. And he was nothing more than that serpent tempting nave Eve with that apple, and she was as drawn to that succulent red object as those two weak willed sinners in the garden had been.”

Where Edmund sees love as being weak, Phoebe sees love as being her strength, and the novel goes on to contrast the difference between the two character's views on love and family. Edmund maybe broken, but is he salvageable? That is the greater question in the book.

“I wish I’d never met you Phoebe Barrett. For then he’d have never know this vulnerability.”

Another aspect of this book that I so thoroughly enjoyed was the camaraderies between the characters. First you have Phoebe, and her friend Honoria Fairfax and Gillian Farandale, two of her closet friends who have also been gossiped about by polite society because of their family connections. I love how Caldwell writes such wonderful friendships in her books. Then there is the relationship that Phoebe has with her siblings, Justina and Andrew, which is warm and sweet. On the other hand Edmund does not have friends because that would make him weak, but he has Wallace his aged butler, who is more like a father to him than his own was. The interaction between Wallace and Edmund gave me hope that Edmund could become the man he was supposed to be. I also got warm feelings by Andrew’s clinging onto Edmund, and Edmund not being cruel to the young dandy.

Edmund’s BDSM sexual proclivities that were mentioned in previous books in the series, are mentioned in this book, but there is no kink practiced in the text of this book. I was surprised that Caldwell did not explore that side of Edmund, or his need for it, as it is another control issue. The omission does not detract from the story. The book is powerfully written, and is an enthralling and poignant tale.
