Breakthrough in Schooling

The Caines have done it! Over the years their books and workshops have been top-notch. But Natural Learning for a Connected World moves to a new level beyond ideas and suggestions for the usual classroom based school. They describe an entirely different school program, approach and culture. Based on their solid understanding of learning, they have incorporated a student-centered philosophy suitable for the modern age with today's youth and technology. This is their best book and I highly recommend. I consider it a breakthrough for schooling.

Learning as Self-Initiated Exploration

There are 2 reasons to buy this book 1) great ideas on what learning and teaching are all about; 2) a great presentation of those ideas.

The Book Description above asks, "Why do video games fascinate kids so much that they will spend hours pursuing a difficult skill? Why don't they apply this kind of intensity to their schoolwork?"

There is a certain way humans naturally learn. This is characterized by personal initiative and decision-making, creativity, a personally-meaningful goal that invigorates the intervening process, and so on. This is the way adults learn, or at least the way adults would want to learn if given the choice.

Children aren't given the choice, though. Current systems of learning exist because of having such a captive audience and historical momentum. It is hard to imagine schools of a similar sort for adults that would have any clientele left after a few sessions.

There's got to be a better way and the Caines show us how. It is a way of learning that is in alignment with who we really are, fully supported by scientific measurements of effectiveness.

To give you a taste of some of their ideas, here are some elements of what they call Perception/Action Learning:

> A catalytic event that generates interest and questions
- Leaners need to encounter a lifelike, real-world event as an experience that has personal meaning and significance, which garners their attention, and which triggers personal interest and relevant and personally meaningful questions.
- Questions must be allowed to surface: What do I do now? How do I solve this problem? What do I do next? What is the most important about this? What do I need to know more about? How do I want to investigate this?

> A follow-up in response to those questions
- Learners have opportunities to gather information, do research, interact with others -- both peers and mentors -- solve problems, try things out, seek coaching and guidance, and repeat and practice regularly in order to acquire knowledge, insight, and skill.
- All those actions will result in real-time feedback of many sorts. The feedback is processed by the learner.
- There should be some learner product or performance. Doing and producing in the real world is an indispensable aspect of Perception/Action Learning.

It is precisely this sort of learning that are utilized by video games. No wonder the resulting fascination and dedication.

The Caines have developed and explained some of these ideas elsewhere but nowhere are they presented in such a clear, coherent manner. This book represents a key maturation point of their career work.

This is the ONE book to buy if you want to be inspired, enthused, and even enthralled by the possibilities in the learning process.

Much to like here, but misleading

This is strongest when it is describing the first part of the title: natural learning, when and how humans learn best. The connection to technology (they really mean high tech) is tenuous, though. The authors are in their element and most enthusiastic when they describe what is wrong with the direct instruction meme so prevalent in schools around the world and in turn when schools and teachers get it right. Tech is a tacked on concept, though, one that is insufficiently discussed and critiqued. This is a worthy read for the first idea, but look elsewhere for how technology might or might not serve the P/AL model they espouse.
