An exciting new approach to regaining health without surgery!

Fact: By the time they reach menopause forty percent of American women have at least one uterine fibroid; 600,000 women are diagnosed each year.
Fact: Fibroids are the leading cause of hysterectomy, the second most common surgical procedure performed on women.
Fact: Natural, holistic medicine can heal fibroids without invasive surgery.

Fibroid tumors, while usually benign, can swell a woman's uterus to the size of a basketball, frequently causing heavy menstrual bleeding, cramping, bladder infections, and even infertility. Most doctors recommend surgery as the only answer. Now this innovative holistic program brings new hope for a surgery-free life to millions of American women.

Dr. Allan Warshowsky combines traditional Western medicine and holistic science to cure not just the fibroid condition but also the underlying imbalances and systemic dysfunctions that can cause fibroids. With an exciting program of diet, exercise, supplements, herbs, and mind/spirit work, Dr. Warshowsky shows fibroid sufferers how to become the strong, healthy women they deserve to be.

From Library Journal
Also called myomas, fibromyomas, or leiomyomas, fibroids develop from a single smooth muscle cell in the uterus and vary in size and shape. They affect as many as 80 percent of women, of whom one in four will have symptoms serious enough to cause her to seek medical advice and treatment. These two practical, easy-to-read guides offer information on the different types of fibroids and the options for treating them. In Healing Fibroids, Warshowsky, a practicing obstetrician/ gynecologist and director of the Women's Program at Beth Israel Hospital's Center for Health and Healing in New York, and Oumano, a certified yoga teacher and bodywork practitioner, combine Western medicine and holistic methods to point the way to optimal health and the avoidance of surgery. After a brief look at surgical procedures and the relationship of hormones and the menstrual cycle to fibroids, they devote chapters to diet, supplements, herbal remedies, exercise, emotional healing, and the effects of environmental toxins, especially xenoestrogens. Skilling, a marketing executive and writer in New York, wrote her first book, Fibroids: The Complete Guide to Taking Charge of Your Physical, Emotional and Sexual Well-Being, when she was first diagnosed with fibroids and could find little information on the subject. She also explores the role of diet, exercise, and emotional well-being in managing fibroids. Arranged by day for the first week after diagnosis, by week for the first month, and by month for the remaining 11 months, the chapters are each divided into two sections, called "Living" and "Learning." The "Living" sections deal with issues and problems, while the "Learning" sections explain the more technical aspects of fibroids. Skilling provides practical tips, such as how to chart the growth of the fibroid and what to wear when you leave the hospital should you need surgery. Readers will find information on current research and medication, the pros and cons of various types of surgery, and hints on diet and lifestyle changes, including exercise and stress management. While both guides are useful, Skilling's arrangement is superior. Her table of contents provides good access points, and the glossary, selected resources, and list of bibliographic references are a definite plus. If you have the budget, get both; but if you have to choose, buy Skilling's. Jodith Janes, Cleveland Clinic Fdn. Lib.

Exactly what I was looking for -- hysterectomy isn't the only answer
By K8
I'm just starting my journey of dealing with a large fibroid that is beginning to cause other problems, and am not at all open to the idea of hysterectomy. I know in my heart that that would just open the door to other (lifelong) issues, and I'm determined to exhaust the natural path before I go down the surgical/pharmaceutical one. It seems like common sense to me that many medical conditions can be healed naturally by bringing the body back into balance so that it can do what it was designed to do in the first place. That requires understanding how the body got out of balance to begin with. This book addresses all of these ideas head-on.

I knew this book was for me when near the front I read, "...a fibroid condition can become a life-enhancing opportunity." Yes, that is exactly what I was looking for -- a book that looks at the whole picture of health -- physically, emotionally, energetically -- and gives concrete ways, in all areas of your life, that you can start to take responsibility for your own healing and overall health. Again, I believe the word balance is the key. When it comes to the way the body functions, there are tipping points in both directions. Lots of little things you do can add up to bad health -- but it works in the other direction, too, where removing all those little things can tip the other way into good health.

The book starts with a layman's medical overview of how these types of gynecological problems arise in the first place. Then it moves into a thorough discourse on all the areas you can review in your own body and life, so that you can begin working to reduce fibroid aggravators and promote healing -- through diet, supplements, herbs, stretching, exercise, meditation, reducing stress, avoiding environmental toxins, etc. Dr. Warshowsky's writing style makes everything very easy to comprehend. I especially appreciated the "case studies" that are interspersed throughout the book, as they seem to cover all the various scenarios for all the different women out there suffering from fibroids -- young, old, fit/active, overweight/out of shape, single/no kids, married/mothers, extreme symptoms, mild symptoms.

It can be pretty overwhelming when things start to go wrong with your body, and it's definitely a shock to hear your doctor say, "it's time to start thinking about a hysterectomy." Something in you immediately starts to believe it right away, and before you know it, you're resigned to that being your only path. But the fact is, unless and until it's a medical emergency, there are many areas that you yourself can work on, little by little, to start swinging the balance back into your favor. Doctors do the best they can to guide you, given the information they have -- but they really only ever get a snapshot of what's really going on with you. You are the only one who actually lives your life day to day and knows your body best, and it really is a matter of being determined enough to accept the responsibility for your own health and start walking the path that's right for you.

Making changes to your diet is a good first step that you can take charge of right away. In my own case, even though I already had a really good diet (lots of organic foods, low-fat, etc.), I had the feeling that I was indulging in things that were causing a lot of general inflammation. My fibroid symptoms were such that I felt I had to take a big step right away, so I cut out many things at once -- sugar, coffee, gluten, dairy, meat, alcohol. I know that sounds drastic, but I figured I could do it for a month and see what happened. I focused on high-fiber foods, lots of fresh fruits, veggies, nuts, fish, eggs, etc. I also started taking various supplements -- boosting basic vitamins like B, C, D, E. This was all under the guidance of a doctor. Within a month I started feeling SO much better, which strengthened my determination to stay on this path. I then found this book and it has confirmed a lot of what my intuition was already telling me. It has been the perfect resource to now start taking further steps into the other areas where I can work to shift and keep the balance in my favor. This book will help you to take the reins on your own journey to good health!

Fibroid Education
By Tara Kamiya
This book was very helpful in understanding what fibroids are and my options. When I went to my GYN I was very educated and they were not able to scare me into some procedure. All women should learn about their bodies, healthy or unhealthy.Remember doctors are running a business, you are running your life!

Answer to a Nightmare
By S. Willis
This book fully addressed my symptoms, causes and treatment. I felt so empowered after reading this book. My Dr. suggested that I have my uterus removed, but the information supplied gave me the alternatives I needed. I have to live with this problem and the treatment, so I was able to chose the method that I could best live with. My fibroids are huge 9.4cm, 7.1cm & 7.3cm, but I'm following the advise listed and have had success. Thank you so much for this wonderful publication. As a black women, fibroids run in my family. I'm so happy to be the one to help the younger ones know how to avoid suffering what I'm going through, and assist the older family members on how to cope/shrink them.
