Good book, worth the price

Not for beginners, I'm a few steps above a beginner so that wasn't a problem. Nice looking book and many good exercise tutorials. Ten times better than 3ds Max Projects: A Detailed Guide to Modeling, Texturing, Rigging, Animation and Lighting and half the price. Amazon.com trade in $1.35 LOL, I'll keep the book.

A pretty good book on character modeling for games, but not for a complete beginner.

I'll echo one of the reviewers and say that this book is exactly what I expected.

Since this book is 160 pages long, I didn't expected it to be an all-in-one, step-by-step guide on modeling, sculpting, texturing and retopologizing a game-ready character. Neither was I expecting it to be suitable for a complete beginner. Instead, what I expected from it was a making-of covering the process of making a character for games. And, as far as I can tell, it does a pretty good job!

This book is NOT for beginners since it assumes the reader is already "confortable" with 3ds Max and ZBrush. The book DOES NOT show how to accomplish a certain technique or to get to a particular tool. Instead it shows the main parts of the process, like modeling the character's base mesh in 3ds Max, developing this mesh through digital sculpting in ZBrush, mapping its coordinates in order to get textures, retopologizing it into a low-poly version and finally posing it for presentation.

Although the book covers all steps promissed, I still believe it lacks a bit in regards of balancing. I mean, the author spends just a few pages on how to model a base mesh in a 3D package (in this case, 3ds Max) and a lot of pages on digital sculpting in ZBrush, then a few pages again on retopologizing in 3ds Max. As a digital modeler/sculptor, I know that a character artist spends way more time sculpting a high-poly character than previously building a base mesh. However, in my opinion digital sculpting is pretty much an artistic process and so it can be achieved in many different ways, depending on the artist. Polygonal modeling, on the other hand, is more of a technical process and although it can be approached by different techniques (box modeling, edge extrusion) the end result should always be the same: a good, clean edge flow (a.k.a. topology).

Therefore my choice for a 4 star rating resides on the author spending less time on the most important aspects of game character creation, such as retopologizing and normal mapping. In my opinion the author could have covered those parts better either by increasing the number of pages or, if it was the case, by spending less pages on digital sculpting in ZBrush. In addition, the author also could have skipped the posing chapter since it is not as relevant as the other parts of the process. But if he considers it as a vital part for the content of the book, he could have chosen to pose the character using ZBrush's Transpose tool since it is way faster and easier than 3ds Max bones and skin combo.

All-in-all this is a well-rounded book brought to life by a recognized artist and 3DTotal Publishing excellent print quality. I recommend it to everyone with an intermediate level of knowledge in 3ds Max and ZBrush, who are seeking to create his/her own game-ready characters.

A book that truly deserves the title of Ultimate Guide....

3D Masterclass: The Swordmaster in 3ds Max and ZBrush: The Ultimate Guide to Creating a Low Poly Game Character is perfect for 3D artists who are frustrated by books that aren't step-by-step. Mr. Gavin Goulden's book leaves nothing to the imagination: he lays out everything he does from beginning to end. To be honest, I initially stayed away from this book because it was a ZBrush-3ds MAX book. Please do not make the same mistake. The book can be followed regardless of what 3d software the artist uses to retopologize their models: the same rules apply. The same goes for artists who start from scratch in Zbrush rather than build a base model in MAX or MAYA. There are also helpful tutorials on Xnormal and the Marmoset Toolbag in here. Mr. Goulden even went as far to include a section on how to rig in MAX. When it comes to low poly modeling, it is no secret the maps and shaders do the heavy lifting and Mr. Goulden spends a good portion of the book devoted to their creation and application. Bottom line: if you want to learn the art of low poly modeling for games, get this book; you won't regret it. I also recommend purchasing this book regardless of your level; this a book an artist can grow into.

Ripped as a teenager from the glitter and privilege of a Russian aristocrat, miraculously escaping the Bolsheviks with his family, he battles to make a new life in a new world, waiting on tables, shoveling ore in a gold mine, and enduring hunger until he achieves security and makes peace with his fate. It is a gripping tale wonderfully told, with a rich cast of surprising characters and a series of enthralling adventures.

About the Author
Paul Grabbe was born in 1902 in St. Petersburg, Russia, the son of General Count Alexander Grabbe, aide-de-camp to Tsar Nicholas II. After a harrowing escape from the Bolsheviks, Paul Grabbe made his way to Denmark, then, four years later, left for the United States where he taught himself English and wrote books on psychology, music and photography before joining the Federal government. He retired to Cape Cod in 1970 where he wrote his memoir.

An Inside View of the Russian Revolution and the American Dream

I was captivated by this memoir. Count Paul Grabbe was a member of the Russian aristocracy (his father was aide to the tsar) when the Russian Revolution happened. He saw it all firsthand and details his life as a child and teen before the revolution and how his family got out, believing all the while it would end quickly and they would return. He got to Denmark and then to the US. He had many, many jobs in the US in all sorts of outrageous places: a TB clinic, a mine, Hollywood, the Ivy League and the US government.He also somehow got into Julliard without being able to play an instrument. It reads like a novel and the events feel fantastical, but they are all true. It was gripping to read the perspective of a man who left a life of privilege to end up penniless and starving only to rebuild his life in ways he never could have imagined. His thoughts on what it is like to leave your beloved country without a choice are heart wrenching. This is also a story of lost love, dysfunctional family, and how the American dream was something that became real even for someone who didn't buy into it. Grabbe was quite a character and I can't get the image of him with his walking stick applying for menial jobs in Colorado Springs in the 1920s out of my mind. This is truly a rare and unusual memoir written with beautiful description and plenty of plot tension.

A must read for Russophiles

Count Paul Grabbe, a very remarkable man, has penned a riveting story of loss, love, challenge and triumph. I could hardly put it down. A refugee from Bolshevik Russia, thrown on his own at a tender age after a privileged childhood, Grabbe learned to survive on very little during his early years abroad. All the while he expected that at some point the Reds would be overthrown and that his assured future in a restored Russia would come to pass. This didn't happen, of course. What the future did hold for Grabbe - a wild variety of occupations including gold mining, screenwriting in Hollywood, a scholarship in composing at Julliard - seems almost as improbable as the imagined scenario he reluctantly gave up. One wonders what personal strengths helped Grabbe suppress, for the most part, longing for his lost world, and summon the resiliency he needed to solve his recurrent existential and personal dilemmas. These, incidentally, are described with humor and a novelistic flair: Grabbe's prose is always interesting and sometimes inspired.
I heartily recommend this thoroughly engaging book as a great read for anyone, but particularly for those interested in late Imperial Russia, the psychology of emigration, and/or life in the US in the first half of the 20th century.

Makes the Life of Russian Nobility and Their Fall from Power Vividly Real

What a great book for taking you right to another place and time--the exotic world of Tsarist Russia. It is rare that you read anything sympathetic to the nobility in Russia before the Revolution, so this presents a refreshing and thought-provoking picture. Alexandra Grabbe has dusted off her father's published memoir and added sections that the had drafted but not completed at the end of his 95 years. From the picture of the life of privilege in courts of Russia, we are transported to the struggle of an immigrant to come to grips with a new country, new language and the need to scramble to survive. This latter portion of the book is very relevant as we discuss immigration reform today.

Nice Try.

I've done many of these for nearly a decade now and am into another 30 day one even as I write this. Let me begin by asking, who is Ray White? What basis is given anywhere in this book or on the Amazon page for this apparently Kindle only book, for me believing or accepting his claims that cayenne pepper is optional? Did it just come from divine intervention, out of thin air? He offers no explanation, instead he simply blows off Stanley Burroughs and those who have continued on with what Burroughs taught for the last twenty-four years since his death.

Rather than substantiating any basis for his claims, Ray White likes to spend time warning us, over and over (see the title of the book), to beware of all the bad information out there. Kettle, meet pot. To suggest that cayenne pepper is only used to for body warmth and is optional, takes this book from instructions on how to do THE Master Cleanse to how the 'Ray White Master Cleanse' should be done. There's nothing about his background, experience or anything about him stated anywhere. How many cleanses have you done Ray? How many have you supervised or helped others do? How many years have you been doing them? Nothing provided folks. And I laughed out loud when I read 23 glasses of lemonade a day. Good luck with that.

It's a very short book. I read it in an hour and to be fair, there are some great things shared in it - I would agree that more lemonade is better but 23 glasses a day - show me someone who reaches that level. After years of Master Cleanses I've never seen anyone that has. There's no evidence given anywhere in this book that any of the sweeping generalizations given - like not doing Master Cleanses for maintenance, is more than wispy, unsubstantiated BS - ironic given the title.

Best Guide to Mater Cleanse I Have Found

The first time I did the cleanse I didn't drink as much lemonade as this book recommends and usually skipped the salt water flushes that it says are essential--and I paid the price. I felt tired, hungry, and lousy. A couple of weeks later I decided to do the cleanse again and follow the book's instructions more carefully. I got much better results. I had more energy, I quickly shed excess fat around my middle, and the patches of reddened, rough, itchy skin that I had for a long time cleared up! My skin was so soft and glowing, I loved it!

Compared to the older books on the Master Cleanse that are available in print, I found this one was more thorough and clear. And compared to some of the Kindle ebooks on the Master Cleanse that are just mass-produced rubbish with poor English and messy formatting, the writing in this is refreshingly good and thorough. It covers all sorts of details that others miss, like what supplements to take before and after the cleanse, how to minimize and handle side effects, and more.

I'd say this is a comprehensive guide to understanding and performing the Master Cleanse. It's sufficient by itself, and I'd also suggest it as a supplement to the original printed book on the topic that's available via a lot of public libraries.

About the Author

Helen Andelin is an experienced author and lecturer on marriage and family life. She is the author of two classic best sellers, Fascinating Womanhood and The Secrets of Winning Men.

She is the wife of Aubrey Andelin, author of the popular book, Man of Steel and Velvet.

Mrs. Andelin's concepts are supported by her own success as a parent. She and her husband are the parents of eight children - four sons and four daughters, all highly moral, responsible and successful. As a tree is judged by its fruits, the Andelins are judged by their children who have become their greatest credentials.

You can buy this book for only $18 at the author's own website. Fascinating Womanhood was her first book and is Excellent.

I am appalled that people are trying to get $50 or more for an $18 book and want to make sure that others know it is available for less with a little more searching. Just search for the name of her first book and put a net behind it : ) I believe that Helen Andelin died in 2009 and her son has taken over the business.

Developing a Loving Mother's Heart

This book is superb! Some of the many wonderful things that this book has taught me are that:

*Children are not born knowing how to be excellent adults, but that they must be taught, while they are children, how to be excellent people. This can be accomplished by cherishing them and acknowledging them as the gifts from God that they truly are.

*Parents have a great deal of responsibility when it comes to parenting; much more than many of us realize today.

*Home is truly where the heart is, and that home should be a warm, loving, positive place where every not only feels, but KNOWS that they are valuable, cherished, needed, and deeply, deeply loved.

Mrs. Andelin writes of many things in this book that pertain to parenting, such as: the home, teaching children, wholesome nutrition, cures for common ailments, nurturing, the responsibilities of husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers,

etc.

This is an EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT book that is written from one devoted wife and mother's heart and can truly help any wife and mother who seeks to develop her heart!

Not what I thought....

I gave this book 3 stars not because it is a bad book......because no where in the description of this book, or in the reviews of it, does it say that this book ONLY contains southwest(and a couple Aztec) native American art. I expected a variety of native American art: Cherokee, Apache, Mohawk, Navaho, etc., not just a 30 page book with 30 pictures of southwest (Pueblo) art.

Indian Designs

I purchased this book because I wanted a source of authentic Indian designs I could use for gourd pyrography, some of which I hope to sell. The book only contains 48 designs, one per page. For my purposes, that many are not a lot to choose from. After reading this statement in the preface, "...intended for personal enjoyment,---and not for commercial purposes." I'm not sure I could sell any gourds with these designs without violating the copyright.
